Montego Tailgate Harness

I've had a good search round the site re tailgate harness probs so apologise if i've missed the answer to this. The harness on my Montego is in a poor state and someone (not the previous owner) has been there before with insulation tape but the situation is now well past that with broken wires and broken insulation on what wires aren't broken. The club do have harnesses for early montegos - before i purchase one does anyone know if the early harness is useable on a late montego albeit with some modification. I don't really want to go diving in with little or no knowledge of this issue. I've thought about using the heat shrink/self solder connectors but i think this area would look a bit clumsy going down that route. I'm new to Montegos of 20 year old vintage and it seems this is a common problem. What solutions have members used to fix this issue. Hope you can help
