  • MG Turbo camshaft problem

Hello, can anyone help. Replaced head gasket and while head was removed I took distributor cap off and rotar arm. The problem is the rotar was seized on to the shaft and when I tap it the shaft came out of the camshaft. Does anyone have any idea at what position the rotar arm shaft be in? Any diagrams or photos greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advance.

Did you also use a proper headgasket and manifold gasket, ?

I don't know what would be improper? Thank you for the link it was helpful. Sadly we still can't get a spark, have checked wiring time and time again, tested what we can and still no spark...

If you've put a decent rotor arm and dizzy cap on it, and put the arm in the correct place then work backwards to the coil, crank sensor. Turbo gaskets are different to normal efi ones as they're more robust. Thicker round the piston holes and manifold gasket has metal surrounds over the exhaust ports.

Hi Jeff, yes I can confirm that the correct gaskets were fitted. There is no spark from king lead, there was an immobiliser fitted but with power to coil we are assuming it is now disarmed. Crankshaft sensor is giving a reading on test meter but still can't confirm it's ok. Thanks for your reply.

Could be immobiliser, have you removed it? If you have another coil try that and also the ecu (black box on the nearside inner arch) as over time they can give trouble. I you have another tried and tested one try that, it wont run correctly but it will give you a spark

Once again Jeff many thanks for your help, unfortunately I have no spares to try, I have been looking for another car to buy to use components then sell on afterwards but just can't find anything. It's frustrating, years ago myself, my brother and my father all had MG Montego's and between us we had countless spares, I gave most of them away when I sold my last car. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

As its a 1989, is it the silver ecu or black one.? I could send over a black turbo ecu. part ADU8479, that would check your existing. There's also this for cross reference on different websites http://maestro.org.uk/forums/forum/t...7-mg-turbo-ecu did the car run before you changed the headgasket btw?

Hi Jeff, you are a gentleman. I bought it a few years ago as a non runner, It is in good condition but as Rimmer's were selling off genuine panels I decided to buy all bolt on replacements while available. Over the course of the last few years I have been gathering bits for it and have now got a bit more time to start doing work on her. First and foremost on closer inspection the cambelt had snapped hence removal of head so that is now all sorted and back on with new valve stem seals and a full decoke ect and have very good compression. So in short I have never had it running and don't know when she was last run. We are away at the moment so can't check on the ECU, i think it's silver but again can't fully remember, would you suggest changing the crankshaft sensor first? It is definitely doing something as when connected to a test meter there is a definite reading however I wasn't monitoring it as I was cranking so I couldn't tell you the reading. May I ask whereabouts in the country you are Jeff?
                      best regards Simon.

If the ecu is silver you can get them checked over and repaired if needed, crank sensors are all the same over the range. Nice to hear of another saved and near back roadworthy and in good company from the signature of the cars you have. I'm in lincoln, not far from rimmers as it happens. If you have nothing coming out of the coil and you've changed that and all else then possibly only 2 other things it could be. Crank sensor dirty or ecu dead

Hi Jeff, funny enough I'm in Spilsby. She is in good company, I have very fond memories of my old Monty days I'm looking forward to feeling the thrill of the turbo again sometime, though I bet it isn't the same as 25 years ago!

Spilsby, blimey just round the cornerish. As it's not running it won't be the same lol, modern cars are quicker now but mg Monty Turbos can keep up. My black turbo could keep up with my mgzs180 at the time up to about 70 mph and that was standard. Are you going to Mike Hewsons petwood concourse in Woodhall spa on 11th August?
