  • For Sale - Ex Police Maestro/MG Maestro Spares

    Hello everyone,

Here we have something a little different, an incomplete white 1988 Maestro City with an MG twist!

The car has been in my family for 27 years, first belonging to the West Midlands Police for use as a panda car, then to my Grandfather in 1991, then to my Father, and then to myself. To those needing proof of the car's history with the Police, I'm afraid there isn't much, but the Police fuse box lid should be a general clue and British motor museum should be able to find official records for its history.

Until 2001 it was regularly used and kept in its original form. Then a year later given to me at the age of 14, as my first car - to which in 2003 I purchased another white donor Maestro, and myself and my father swapped the interior, and doors over to our original car (this was all in preperation for my first car). Sadly the project was never completed. I kept the bumpers but did not fit them, and the car is still incomplete, but I have all the spares (and two dashboards). The 1.3 reconditioned engine was done in the late 90s and the original four speed gearbox are still with the car, but the car has not been started for around 15 years.

The car has been in storage until late last year, when I had to remove it due to roof repairs.

I'm not an owner of a running Maestro or Montego, but my parents had one of each on the driveway thoughout the nineties and I have a soft spot for these cars. I actually have a Rover 200 Mk1 which I preserve, and although they outsold the Maestro and Montego in the end, they are actually rarer today! I also have two other classics - so I'm unlikely to get round to doing anything about returning this to the road, I may even sell my Mk1 200 to get my car numbers down to a reasonable number.

So because of my respect for these cars I thought I would offer it here first, before I break the car for spares, and send the shell off to be scrapped (along with the engine and gearbox), which I wouldn't want to do, but it is now in our garden and its condition will only deteriorate further. Someone could always return it to a Maestro city, convert it back into West Midlands Police livery (wouldn't that be great?).

Of course, my hopes for saving this car are unrealistic, but it could be of real use to members of the club as it is now, before I start to break it, which may be the start of next month. Which in hindsight might of course be better as it will serve more people in a useful way.

Condition wise the exterior is not in great condition, the shell would be solid, although it is tatty and the car did have welding - this is not a minter by any stretch of the imagination. Now the interior although dusty, is free from tears, holes, and I would say is very good and this is the most valuable part of the car.

I just had a re-issued V5C come through the post for it today so I can actually do something about legally selling/dismantling the car again.

If I do take the step of removing the interior, doors, bonnet and bootlid, I will of course notify this thread again so that it appeals to the right people who may need it.

I'm open to all enquiries and offers from everyone, but it won't be staying with me much longer sadly. Pictures below. Car located in Solihull, West Midlands.

    Thanks for reading,

    Dave
