  • WTD: PAS rack & pipes to suit 2.0 EFi

I'm looking to convert my 1988 MG Maestro to PAS. I'm working on a couple of assumptions - 1) Maestro and Montego rack are the same, 2) Different rack required depending on engine/gearbox. Eg if it's a rack from a car with the VW box, it won't fit a car with the Honda box.

It would be nice to buy a scrap car and pull the parts off it but I don't have the space!

    Any advice and guidance appreciated.

    Thanks, George

All of the power steering racks are interchangeable, quite rare to find one on a vw gearbox car, but the only difference is that the vw one has a bracket welded on for the gear linkage. Bracket can be left on or cut off if fitting to a pg1 car. You'll also need the universal jointed coupling that goes from steering column to rack, and the plastic cover that the shaft goes through on the bulkhead/floor. Pipes and pump will probably be hardest bits to find, beware of diesel pas pumps, they turn the opposite way to the petrol ones. good luck

Thanks for this, useful info. Unfortunately I already purchased a diesel PAS pump assuming it would be the same! Ah well never mind.

If you can make up a bracket to mount the pump on with the pulley to the passenger side, then you could still use the diesel pump, it might look a bit odd, but could be easier than finding a good petrol one. Apparently some Volvos use an electric pump for their pas, this could be another option.
