  • Montego Turbo too fast,?

Someone is claiming that Austin tried to recall the cars to fit a restrictor plate to the carb as they were deemed too fast and drop power from 150 to 130bhp.
    Anyone know of this?
Sounds like an old wives tale?

Thats a new one on me and likely to be complete rubbish as they later released the even faster maestro version.

I always thought that they shared exactly the same mechanicals and the Maestro was faster due to the added weight of the Montego. However I have just read that there is only about 15kg difference??

Yes Maestro's are the same mechanically although it was widely rumoured that AR ran the press cars at more boost than std to acheive the figures, not sure how much truth is in that tho tbh - probably a rumour started by Ford when their Escort RS Turbo took 1.5 secs longer to hit 60mph! lol

Montego/Maestro Turbos do have a blow off valve built into the plenum chamber designed to stop the turbo running more than 14psi of boost (std is about 10psi) but other than that no they didn't recall them to detune although they did update the suspension and ECU on facelifted cars which helped with torque steer but they still made 150bhp.
