  • Just bought a Maestro .....

Hi, have been reading a few posts since buying a Maestro 1.3 clubman recently 49k from new, it has been off the road since early last year so needs some light re-commissioning.

Does anyone know where I can get an air filter .........nothing at rimmers or on ebay. I had no idea they would be so rare .......Even a part number would be helpful all the best

Part number is GFE 1103 (unipart).

Still can't find anywhere that stocks a 1.3 air filter

However on the auto doc parts website they offer the dimensions of the filters they sell and I compared a Renault 18 1.4 filter and they are very similar in size. The Renault 18 filter is round rather than oval but will fit in the oval filter box. The only size difference is it is about 10mm short in height but can be increased with a bit of ingenuity. One side of the rubber could be cut off the old filter and glued on to the bottom of the new filter ??? I used to work on Renaults during my apprenticeship hence the idea (i don't buy of the auto docs website unless I am desperate as they can take up to two weeks to deliver in my experience)

You could probably get away with a 10mm bead of tiger seal, but the good news is that there are some filters available in Leeds. I mentioned that you were looking for one, so you can expect a more positive reply appearing in the next day or two

Thanks for the info will give them a bell in the morning, have bought a R18 filter in any case on ebay for £6 post included.

Also bought two new fittings from rimmers for the inlet manifold that were corroded for the water pipes. The two pipes were just joined together so should make a difference to the running. The temperature runs hot quite quick when sat in the drive but goes down to half way when out on the road. Thermostat seems to work as does the fan, will keep an eye on it, oddly there was a new water pump in the boot. The slide in the carb was sticking in the housing until it was cleaned, picks up well now. Will need to find an exhaust manifold heat shield for the air filter warm air pipe to attach as it is a bit rusted out

Is the fan kicking in when on tick over if you say it's getting hot? If so you may want to give the system a flush out as something maybe clogged. Exhaust manifold heat shield are asbestos so you may not be able to find one. I've used an exhaust heat shield from a modern car and cut it to fit in the past.

Yes the fan kicks in on tick over, but nothing unusual about that, but yes it will get a flush through when the inlet manifold fittings come and I can reconnect the two pipes. As there is a new water pump to hand, I might as well fit that as well. My heat shield is rusty steel lol but might be able to make one up

Recently stripped the carb down to clean the inside and replace the butterfly spindle bushes and seals, the throttle slide was a bit sticky as well. The engine runs like a dream now and the throttle is very responsive now. Certainly there was some air leaking at the spindle.

The water pump had a little play in the bearing and probably why there was a new one in the boot. Flushed the system, no coolant found and some dirty water come out of the rad. Got the new pump out and realised they had bought a pump that has a take off for the tiny pipe normally found on a mini ........of course this is blanked off on the Maestro, probably why it is still in the boot ;-)
