  • new member - 80's scale 1/43 collector

Hi all, I collect diecast scale 1/43 motors from the late seventies up until 1985. All my models have British number plates and are right hand drives.

I have seventeen models so far... see below:

What I don't understand is why don't they produce the Austin Meastro's and Montego's? They do equivalent motors from the same era such as your sierras, cavaliers and escorts etc but I would dearly love an early version of an Austin Meastro and Montego.

Does anyone know if they have plans to produce these models?

    Thanks in advance.

      Very nice.
As Jeff said, sadly you won't find any Maestros and Montegos as the model makers don't think there is any market for them.
The only models available are 1/92 unpainted pewter casts of a Maestro Turbo on a base. These are produced by Autosculpt:

That's a VW John, but I know what you mean. I enquired to Autosculpt about making a Montego model a long time ago and again not interested.

                Thanks for the replies.

It just seems silly they don't think it's worthwhile cost-wise to produce versions of the Meastro and Montego even though they've produced four or five different colours of the Allegro which was one of their predecessors.

The Allegro wasn't exactly the greatest car of all time was it?

How do they foresee that it's not going to be cost-effective - I'd like to know how they carry out their market research. Wonder if they decide to carry out market research for all the other models they produce or does someone just decide to produce them anyway just by taking a risk?

I'm sure if they took a risk with the Montego/Meastro it'll be wortwhile. Going by this forum alone there'd be tons of entusiasts willing to pay £15-£20 for one of these and it'd be a success.

                Here's to hoping anyway.

I agree and of course you're 'speaking to the converted' here on this forum, but none of the makers seem interested at all.

                      Hah, quite!

Excellent collection, by the way. I often think I should replace most of my 1:18 models with 80s cars such as these! I've seen plenty in the same scale, but they can be pretty expensive.

It is strange that corgi produce virtually every other British Leyland car made and not the Montego/Maestro. As mentioned, you can get the Allegro, Marina, Princess, SD1, TR7, MGB, MGF, MGZT. Mind you, no MG ZTT, nor the ZR/ZS either. Also, no 200/400 I don't think. It's been said before, if they produced 2000, they'd easily sell. I for one would buy at least half a dozen MG Montego Turbos

When I first came across these motors back in January I became hooked pretty quickly and started a rapid collection. Straight away I knew I wanted all the cars from my childhood (when I was 3 or 4 years old back in the mid-eighties I loved staring out the window and looking at all the cars - I think by 1986 I knew the names of most of the UK roadcars).

Just a huge shame they don't do the Meastro and Montego. One of my neighbours had a red A-reg Meastro and a friend of mine from school was always picked up in a black B-reg Montego so both these cars bring back a lot of memories; they were brand new at the time.

I'm currently customising a ford sierra - painting one in black colour to add to my collection. Brought another one of the red ones in my picture and if it goes well then I'll paint a couple more in different colours, obviously changing the number plates. I've had some decals produced so sticking on the ford signs won't be a problem.

I love the mk1 Ford Sierras but only if they have the smooth nose!

I think 1/43 scale is just about right. They do take up space and £15-£20 a car is affordable. The two Cavaliers I got really cheaply... something like £8 for each on ebay.

For that splendid model carpark you have there you need a 1/43 T**T in a shell suit sprinting along with audioline's finest stuffed down his front

I think given time there will be a model maestro or montego, it maybe 1/76 though oxford diecast tend to do their range in both scales. The reason I say this is as a railway modeler, 80s era is becoming one of the most popular eras to model and im sure over the next couple of years there will be a huge increase in the models available. Ten years ago there was virtually nothing for 1960s road vehicle now with the odd exception of the 1100/1300 there is a massive range

While on the subject of die-cast models, I came across these on ebay while trying to find 1/18 Rover 75s and ZTs. Nothing except these:-

                              http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-18-China-Roe...item231117a6ee

As they don't make or sell these outside China, I decided to buy a couple! (via ebay of course) A bit expensive and take a while to arrive, but believe me, the attention to detail is awesome! I got one in silver and the other black. (No writing on the doors mind!) I'm hoping they don't become available officially over here and that soon they'll stop making them, cos the price can only go up in my view! Knowing my luck they'll be ten a penny in a couple of years!
