  • Maestro in USA

Hi! I just bought a 1983 Austin Maestro Vanden Plas here in Washington (the state, not the city) and wish to introduce myself. I also just joined the club.

    The car's this one:

which, despite my initial lukewarm reaction, eventually charmed me into making the seller an acceptable offer. It's this car, from its previous days in the UK:

For the last few years I've also owned a 1982 MG Metro which was brought over here by the same guy:

    which I use for towing:

I'm hoping to find a towbar for the Maestro that doesn't require cutting the rear bumper. Are such things to be had? I've also heard that there's at least one other Maestro somewhere in North America, but the previous owner of mine never had any luck contacting its owner. If anyone is familiar with that car, and if its owner wouldn't object to exchanging information, please let me know.

Hi Mike, welcome to the Club! I've changed your forum status to show you're a paid-up member (Your membership pack is in the post!)

Re: Tow bars; As far as I know, for all Maestros fitted with plastic bumpers a few different designs exist but all of them involve cutting the rear bumper. The tow bars incorporate a vertical bracing piece that attaches to the rear panel behind the bumper. If you remove the rear bumper, you'll see a moulded-in template that shows where to cut the slot.

As for the other Maestro in the US. It has been spotted on a couple of websites but the owner(s) have never made contact with the Club and we don't know where it is now.

      Richard,

Thanks! I received the membership pack today. One other question: I'm interested in some of the items in the club shop, many of which indicate that UK postage is included in the price. How do I get a quote for shipping costs to the US?

I've been commuting in the Maestro every day for the last couple of weeks; so far, so good. Thanks for the welcome!
