What type of carb kit is correct for a 1994 1.3 maestro is it a HIF38SU or HIF44SU and whats the difference?

Its the HIF44. The naming is broken down to "HIF" - Horizontal Integral Floatchamber. The type with a side floatchamber like on early Minis was just HF. The number is the throat diameter in mm. The SU bit denotes that make, although the 1.3 HC engine can have either the HIF44 with manual choke or HIF44E with electronic mixture control.

The carb is part number FZX 1529 and is a manual choke HIF44 suitable for unleaded petrol. Very expensive to buy new, but you can get a repair kit from the SU Carb company for about £40.
