  • The state of my old turbo.

I recently got hold of a good turbo as my old one needed replacing as it was in a bit of a mess with about 1-2 mm play from side to side.

The new one isn't as musical and it doesen't carry on spinning once I've cut the motor

Yes that is definatly broken. Looks like something has got in there to damage the blades that much. (Usually when the bearing goes the outer fins simply hit the casing).

Make sure the oil supply to the turbo is fine before running the new one (just to be sure it wasn't an oil supply issue that killed the old turbo).

Well I can't be sure that it's not spinning,I just can't hear it once I cut the ignition.

what's the easiest (least messy) way to check that the turbo is getting oil.

Loosening the return pipe to the sump with the engind running ?

That's a relief, because I've given the new turbo a few good runs already.
