  • MG Montego Turbo dead....fuse, short circuit, ....?

    Hi,
Tonight I turned off the engine of my Turbo when still cold and very shortly thereafter a very loud bang occurred. Tried to start the engine again 10 seconds after the bang but the car was completely dead. I connected a battery charger and tried to fire up which only resulted in a loud buzz. Starter motor doesn't react at all and also the fuel pump can't be heard. Also the carburettor cooling fan is on constantly (also with ignition off) when the battery charger is connected....

Would anybody have a clue what went wrong?

    Thanks
    Guus

Carb cooling fan will kick in regardles and keep going for about 15 mins, you can disconnect. A loud bang? In the carb or as a backfire or something else?

Thanks, already took the fuse of the carb cooling fan out.
The bang sounded like a gun shot and seemed to come from somewhere in the middle or backside of the car.

Sounds like a backfire through the exhaust. Have you changed the battery for another? Also check the main fuses

Indeed must have been backfire through exhaust. Fuses seem OK. It remains a mystery to me why the battery was flat after the backfire.
Anyway, fully charged the battery overnight and this morning the car started instantly!

          Thanks for the advice.

Great it's sorted but you may need a new battery if it went flat quickly
