  • DIY sump guard

I'm after some sump protection for my 1.3 Maestro, but am not after spending much money. Was thinking of buying something off a 4x4 like this and making it fit. I've got an angle grinder so can do some cutting and at a push can weld a bit. Is it do-able, or will it be useless? Doesn't have to be lightweight, or pretty, just has to stop me splitting my sump or gearbox on a rock (split my gearbox in two the last time I was driving in central Asia, leaving me stuck in 4th). If its viable, where would be best to attach it?

    Cheers,
    Danny

Central Asia? Where are you off to? Is this a Maestro on the Mongol Rally project? Send an email to Mail@endurorally.com and we will send you a book on rally preparation tips.
You need something at least 8mm, and mounted on something to absorb a bit of shock, Land Rover engine mountings are good, tried them on an Allegro and a Morris Minor.

mrmg: Thats amazingly good value! Anyone going across Asia should have a steel one, easier to repair, less plone to splitting.

Ive tried to email you on the Hen address you gave me on the phone, but its bounced back - would you mind emailing me, please? Mail@endurorally.com

what about 2no layers of close weld mesh on a frame? to allow for charge cooling ?
0-60 in 8.2 hours 1/4mile in time for breakfast but the rust wins hands down

A brick in the road would rip it out.

I've already done the Mongolia rally a couple of years ago. Was quite fun, but my mate broke the gearbox in half in our escort, so only 4th and sometimes reverse would work. Ended up reversing over hills that were too steep. Finished it though, even though we did about 500 miles in that state. Didn't sound very healthy mind.

At £50 i'm very interested. I'm rather busy with work at the moment so I don't know if i'll get time to give you a call this week but i'm definately interested. How long does it take for him to make them up? Think i'd be going with the steel one as i'm not massively bothered about weight and i'm less likely to break it.

                sump guard

hey guys, just to give you a bit moe information.

the sump guards are completely tailored to the maestro. they have the holes in the right place and they fit snugly.

there are 3 holes about the size of a gaffer tape middle so the sump can get cooled, these can be covered with mesh if preferred.

as i said previously, i have used these sump guards for my race car, and have really helped me when i am jumping over curbs! they stand up to anything..

the metal guy gets one ready within the day, so there is no massive lead time.

i can send these via parcelforce 24hr delivery, so if you ordered one on a monday, you will get it on wednesday.

if anyone is interested, give me a call and i will give you my address to send a cheque to.

This is good news, and brilliant value, so have ordered one. Will Isopon the mesh over the holes from the top side, to keep grit and gravel out.

So, a Maestro is off to Mongolia with Roperman, hope you keep us posted with your progress - what preparation mods are you doing to the car?

If this guy goes by the name racinghen then beware. I sent him out a engine mount in good faith once. He never did pay for it. I phoned, he lied a lot (I can't emphasise that enough, it was embarrasing for me to even listen!) and I got nothing for being helpful. I now never send out stuff before cheques have cleared even from genuine enthusiasts.

If you are not racinghen then apologies. Just the Hen email set off alarm bells.

Ive ordered two sumpguards - I will let you know what happens, one is a drop of sponsorship for Roperman, we ought to help him get a Maestro to Mongolia, but, alas, despite PM and email, he doesnt respond, so, we dont know where to send it! The other sumpguard is for the project-Maestro being ruggedised for the drive across the length of Africa on the forthcoming London to Cape Town Rally. The car is a 15,000 miles from new 1.6L and is currently in the paint shop being turned into the old Leyland war-paint scheme of red and white roof (Tony Fowkes Automobiles in Park Royal, north London, if you are passing). Its getting the virtually new front wings removed and replaced with new van/city wings and a metal bumper, we are missing the end-caps for the bumper - anyone got any good ones that can help us? The existing front wings (silver-blue) are up for sale at £25, buyer collects from Tony Fowkes Autos.

There are two other good wings and some MG wheels at Rally Preparations Services of Witney if it helps anyone.

                        Hi Philip,
the reason i've not responded is because i've barely left work in the last two weeks, been doing about 70 hours a week. Not even checked my emails. Thats a really nice gesture and will hopefully stop me smashing my sump in. Its come at a good time actually, because i've been struggling for sponsorship as of late. I'm actually driving to Tajikistan over the Pamirs for charity this time, Mongolia was the last one (but for some reason I didn't mention that), but if anything I think the roads will be worse this time.

I'm in the process of finalising my website, and i've been intending to write a piece for on here, so hopefully will get that done soon.

Driving to Cape Town sounds fun, when will you be doing that? I actually have one n/s end cap, the other is probably still at the roadside somewhere in northern Sweden. You're welcome to it if its any use to you.

                        Thanks,
                        Danny

Are you going via Iran? Very friendly and helpful locals, with good roads. I can put you in touch with the local motor club who could help you with visas and much else.
Russia route is mostly boring roads and a load of hassle from police wanting bribes.
