Hi, I am looking to do the same to my 1.3, could someone tell me what gearbox is used & what is involved in the change?

    Thanks, Josh.

I bought a ledbury gearbox linkages and mounts but the gear ratios are no good. So i googled VW gearbox codes loads of sites and found all codes for the same ratio as the Maestro. I got a gearbox off ebay but be aware some boxes have the reverse switch in the wrong place, if you get a VW plug you can still use it. At the moment i am changing the end casing on mine, when i finish the conversion i will let you no whats needed.

Did this many years ago to an 86 City... twice in fact as the first gearbox had a bearing gone. Used a VW box but it was shorter than the 4 speed, has to change the RHS hand gearbox mount from a doner car which moved engine about 1/2 inch back to the left. No other parts used.

Do you know the code for the correct 5 spd box?

I swapped 4 speed vw box for a 5 speed vw box out of a donnor maestro, the only thing i needed to change was the small gear linkage. the small linkage on the 4 speed is smaller than the small linkage on the 5 speed.

i dont know if this is of much help but hopefully it is

                Josh,

I have a 5-speed box taken out of a 1988 Maestro 1.3 Mayfair that I used to own. It had done just over 100,000 miles and was still in good working order.

I can also help with your request for a wiper arm and steering column cowl.

PM me if you are interested.

                Paul
