  • some b******* nicked my van

just pasted my test and my girlfriend bought me a maestro camper van for£500, only had it a month and someone nicked it, it was insured but only as a van not a camper van, so when i rang the insurance they told me the book value was £125 so with the £100 excess they offered me £25, i just stopped my derect debit instead which was £45 so now ive got nothing and if the police do find it they take it to a garage and charge me £105 to get it back plus so much per day which ive heard is about £45. i dont know who is the biggest thief, the insurers, the police , or the one who nicked my lovely van. so if anyone should see a red maestro camper van with side window the reg is
    G910 HOA
could they let me know or the police
    my email address is

Very sorry to read about the theft of your camper van. But as far as your insurance is concerned, I am worried that by just cancelling your direct debit you will only be making a bad situation worse. Your policy would almost certainly be an annual policy, even though you were paying monthly for it and the insurance company can come after you for the whole of annual premium. I don't think it will be possible for you to cancel the policy and get a refund for the rest of the year either once a claim has been made, and anyway simply cancelling the direct debit would not cancel the policy, which would need to be agreed with the insurance company and they would want the Certificate of Insurance back.

If that is the case, you might as well keep paying the premiums and maybe the insurers would agree to suspend cover while you are without a vehicle. I realise this is not the advice you want, but honestly I would phone up the insurers and reinstate the direct debit, otherwise you'll just end up owing them money for the rest of the premium and get a black mark against your name which could make it difficult for you to get insurance (or credit) in the future.

I do hope you get some good news about the camper van.

Oh Dear. It's all new to me because I've never had a car before or had to deal with insurance companies. I never thought of that. I'll ring them tomorrow.

          Thanks for the advice.

I guess its too late now, but never accept an insurance first offering. Show them proof you paid £1000, and find some other for sale as close to £1000 as you can to prove thats what you'll need to pay again.....

skippy you were right there will be charges if i cancel my direct debit,it looks like it will be cheaper to restart it,and keep on paying it even though it means paying insurance for something i haven't got. then if i get my van back or buy another ill just have to transfer my insurance over which will cost about £20, and i want have to start from scratch and pay deposit and other charges like when i started. anyway thanks skippy for letting me know how cruel the world of insurance is, its a real eye opener.

                o yeah and cheers ben,
any one got a cheap maestro van for sale in really good nik

                  Puzzled

Why didn't you tell them it was a camper? What did you say when they asked if there were any modifications?

I own an MG Maestro Turbo but if I insured it as a Maestro Special then it would be my own fault if the insurance company did not pay out in the event of a claim.

because i was having trouble with then finding maestro van on they computers so i was trying to make things easier and i didn't now if they were made like that in the first place. just wanted to get it insured so i could go out and drive it, i'd just passed my test and was too keen. it was a matter of oh that will do,as long as i'm legal. looks like i,m learning the hard way

Well if you told them it was a camper then you should not be penalised because it was not on their computer. I guess you should have insured it as a Maestro 500 Van (or whatever it says on the log book) and then say that it has a Tandy conversion when they ask you about modifications.

What you should do now is show them adverts of other Maestro Camper Vans when you are disputing the amount they have offered you. I am not sure what the current values are but quite recently decent ones were fetching prices in the thousands not the hundreds.
