The "Hot Hatch" group test of the:
1600cc XR3i V 1600cc MG Maestro (with talking dash) V 2000cc Astra GTE
is now out in the March edition of Classics Monthly.
The reporter has been generally kind to all three cars. The report on the Maestro was quite complimentary except for the usual "faintly middle-aged image" quote!
I did find the conclusion at the end a little confusing.
The Maestro scored the lowest in the points total. It was awarded 23/25.
The Astra was awarded 25/25 and the XR3i got 24/25. So the Astra won? Well not quite?
If you read the end comments the author then goes on to say....
"But my choice has to be the Maestro, partially because of its fifth door, partially because of the nostalgia value of hearing the trademark creaks emanate from the dashboard and partially for the thrill of owning a car with red seat belts....."
...... "and "the real reason is the voice of Ms Nicolette McKenzie (the voice of the talking dash?), which makes the MG sound like an exasperated headmistress."
Result
Shame that they didn't include the 2.0 litre version with non talking dash.
