Really it'd be crazy to keep hydraulic lifters with your potential. Solid lifters will enable you to get a much more aggressive profile than 285's. You are right, newman can reprofile a 285 like spec to still work with hydraulics, but if you are going to extend the rev limit, and spend much time at the top end, say revving to 5k+ then solid lifters are the way forward. Once you hammer the engine for aggressive bursts for longer than a few hours the oil will thin out and the profile, and your timing suffers. Again it is really the only way to get true value back from the money spent on porting and converting to a big valve head.
Stick with 285's and hydraulic lifters and your head will flow as well as a head with 270 piper cams, and a home-brew port and polish!
Obviously it all depends which way you want to go and what your power goal is. But, that is a tricky line to take with you on this as you say 300~ but your spec says 700+ I'm just saying if you want the ultimate engine it makes sense to go for it.
