  • How to go road-rallying...

If you have read reports of "12-car rallies" (round the lanes events run by local motor-clubs), or, the Monte Carlo, or Le Jog (Lands End to John-o-Groats), and wondered how you get started, then a seminar is being held at the Gaydon Motor Museum that should be of interest on Saturday, July 30th.

    Its all about production-car minimal-mods road-rally events.

There are various workshops you can drop in on and hear about navigation, time keeping, maps, dealing with marshals at checkpoints and how it all works, what you need to do to the car and prepare and more.

Stuart Turner, boss at BMC Competitions Dept in the era of the all-conquering Mini Coopers (three wins on the Monte and much else) who then went on to Ford to manage the Escorts, is giving a talk late morning, with films, which promises to be amusing and inspiriring.

Successul navigator Paul Robinson is giving a talk on map reading and time keeping from 10.30, Stuart Turner takes the floor at 11.30, a break for lunch in the cafe is a chance to check out the cars in the museum, and in the afternoon there is a session on car prep, and then a timed "run" around the lanes, with time-controls, passage-controls, with a marked map given to you at the start along with a Tulip road book (which doesnt contain pressed-flowers, as one newcomer suggested at the start of an event). This is a day out to help newcomers find their feet. The long distance epics are one presentation but the day is chiefly about grassroot low-cost road events.

Entry for the day is £10. Just rock up at Gaydon, off junction 12 of the M40, half an hour south of the NEC/Birmingham airport, or 45 minutes from Oxford or High Wycombe, its easy to find near Warwick. Club member Philip Young will be pleased to welcome you, and Tony Fowkes will have his project Maestro on display - to rival that, Gaydon will have the ex-works London to Mexico Austin Maxi and Paddy Hopkirk's London to Sydney 1800 Landcrab in the reception area.
