  • Maestro motorsport historical archive

Just had a long chat with Pablo Raybould and we are going to start accumulating any/all snippets of info we can find on the Maestro's long and successful history in motorsport (both past and present).

We would like to invite and encourage anyone else with anything to share/add to post below (or put it online and put a link to it e.g. scanned docs/photos/vids etc.)

There's no book yet on Maestro motorsport history (or tuning info/ set up data), but this might at least capture a lot of the useful info for posterity (and/or form the basis of a book if anyone wants to write one in the future).

      ++++++++++++++Austin Rover Rally Sprint
The ’83 Rally Sprint’s competitors included Nigel Mansell, Jimmy McRae, Pentti Airikkala, Danny Sullivan, Derek Warwick, Stig Blomqvist, Tony Pond, John Watson

I believe that it was only the 1983 event that used Maestros and I can only find the following on the '83 event:

BBC Rally Sprint 1983 - Race
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G_sS011854
[a thrilling MG Maestro 1600 race at Donington for celeb competition drivers inc. Mansell, Blomqvist, John Watson, Tony Pond, Derek Warwick etc. Part of the “Austin Rover Rally Sprint”])

This thread gives info on the '84 event (but this used Montegos):
      http://www.maestro.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=11941

including Shots from the ’84 event’s program (Montegos not Maestros). However, there is a pic of a roadgoing Maestro 2.0 and also of the ’83 Maestro 1600s racing. Most of the competitor line up is the same as ’83 but some names are different.

I do have several pictures but I will need to did them out, as we have recently moved I cant quite remember where they are. But basicly there are pics of the RAC in the late 80s and of a single venue maestro challenge rally event at Croft. A friend of mine spoke to Rick Champion the other week and he still has his car .
I did have a poster of Pablo's car been driven by Tony Pond on the 87 manx but after searching my mums loft could I hell as find it. I told Pablo he could have it if it turns up.
Remember what I posted about the 6R4 project hope you find something on that.

There was an artical in CCC probably early 86 about the maestro and how it was to use the V64V engine and share its 4wd transmission with the astra 4S for group s rallying

                Thanks, that would be great!
I wrote to John Dalton recently and got a call back from him last night. He was a font of knowledge, and has a treasure trove of historical material (compiled on a CD) which he has very kindly offered to post me.

This car did see the light of day as it was used by Jonh Welsh in Rallycross in the late 80s.
The is a picture possibly on here but also on the austin rover site of a 2dr maestro. Look closely and you will notice that the arches are quite a bit bigger than normal, im pretty sure tis is from some kind of motorsport project.

He certainly is. It must be a good few years since I saw him though The 'scene' is a poorer place since people like John stopped being an active part of it.

Maybe one day someone will say the same about me lol
