    A few answers to recent questions:

    Yes, I owned the car as I raised the sponsorship (a chance meeting at Goodwood with the stall-holder next door to us!), and I would like to see it exhibited somewhere, Members ought to have a chance to see the car.

    I think Jane and Gill did brilliantly. Gill's father (who is seriously ill) I think was behind the entry-fee etc.... Gill paid all the entry fees herself ....I feel a need to place that on record. Tony Fowkes put in tremendous hours in the prep, he had the car for nine months. He lost count of the hours, frankly, it was a labour of love by a real enthusiast. The detail of his care soon showed up when other cars started to fall apart. He resisted all sorts of ideas, but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed working with him. Interestingly, his ideas were also passed on to a Mercedes driver (Tony being ex-works Mercedes rally driver and who also then went on to assist the team with logistics planning), and his tips were mostly ignored...that car became the most unreliably car on the event. The Maestro probably proving the most reliable. (one reason it did so well).

    Jane is a very gutsy driver - Ive seen her drive in uk events in the past, and was surprised, however, at the way she rose to the challenge. Gill's ability on maps was fairly well known so the 2nd place overall at Dover, while a bit of a surprise, was half expected (several rivals told me they thought she would be in the first six or so) by Baune (half way down in France, end of leg one).

    She made one big mistake and nose dived into a ditch, the car fell on its nose, with back wheels up in the air, and the girls had to stop other cars to help them pull the back down before they could drive out. The strengthening around the front, double plating behind the bumper bar and much else, proved a gods-send. The only faults I can see on the car are: a) smashed rear right side light, by an Ozzie driver impatient at not being able to get passed...b) front left headlight not working; c) exhaust valve burnt.

    The head was done by Peter Burgess and was set up to run leaded, unleaded, paraffin etc. It was on three cylinders when it ran into Cape Town. It had big petrol line filters to both tanks, Jane says its not fuel, its the valves. We had fitted NEW inlet, but could not trace new exhaust valves in the prep (see appeals on this site earlier).

    It was the lowest powered car on the event, but, was never out of the top ten. It was probably the most original (ie, mostly manufacturers parts-bin stuff, chiefly organised by MG Mal), all the others ahead of the car were using a lot more specialised stuff (brakes, clutches, tuning, lighter panels etc).

    John Clayton wants to get it to Race Retro Show (Stoneleigh, near Coventry) end of the month but its touch and go as the ship might not have docked in time. I would suggest its cleaned up and shown "as is" although I bet Tony Fowkes will want to sort the dents etc.

    I tried to access this forum on the event from Africa, but kept being told I needed to give my I.P. address (what is that), so couldnt get in, thanks to those who have kept this amazing performance well reported. The Maestro Project has done you all proud.

        If time is tight leave all the dents in and leave the authentic african mud on it too. It adds to the authenticity!

          Ah Philip, good to see you back on the forum.

          I can only reciprocate what everyone else has already stated.

          A job well done by all the principles involved.

          Depending on which port "Betty" is returning to, I may be available to help collect / transport her to either Oxford or even Race retro if needed.

            Just like to say that was the best months entertainment I've had for a long time. Real sitting on the edge of my seat stuff. Well done all round.

            As from the film "Reach for the Sky" ........ "Mr Young where can I buy an MG Maestro"

                Good idea to get the Africa Maestro to Stoneleigh's Race Retro show...howver, the ship arrives March 3, so that is that - it wont make it in time... a shame. No doubt there will be other shows coming up this Spring/Summer.

                This is presumbaly the best ever result in an international rally for any Maestro. Given the way it was driven (not able to "relax" and take easier timed sections at a slacker pace - the girls were in max-attack mode the whole time, even on days that were 1,000 kms long), the car really has performed brilliantly. Any exposure can do the whole brand and image the world of good from here on, so its in the club's interest to keep up the profile.

                  I would say that it's a must for the NEC if the club has a stand this year.

                  Also for the BMC/BL Day in August if available.

                    Great job done on the rally, congratulations to all involved in the success, and a little bit of the credit to the little Maestro.

                    By the way thanks to all of you who made this thread such a well documented cracking read, you all know who you are.

                    Shame about the valve burrning out, I think the main suspect has to be the dyno tuning, probably not leaving the fueling safe? The one thing out of the control of Peter Burgess & Tony & Philip.

                    • And the dodgy fuel and the fuel supply probs they had (fuel vapourisation it was reported as but I reckon it'll be the cam driven pump giving up the ghost!). Any of the above could have contributed. It isn't something that is usually seen on good fuels.

                      • Thanks everyone for your support. Glad we were able to provide you with some entertainment over the last few weeks! It's been an amazing experience we'll never forget and we love "Betty" dearly. We had lots of enquiries about the car across all the countries we visited and we were proud to tell them all that she was made in England!!
                        Sorry we didn't keep you all updated more regularly but we needed to keep the weight down and travelled light so did not take our laptops, i-pads etc etc.

                          Welcome to the forum!.

                          Considering the spares package, the books for the schools and of course your own "Kit", I'm not surprised you left the electronics behind!.

                          I enjoyed reading up on your updates via the website, as well as the rally update on the ERA pages.

                          I could just imagine the grins on both of your faces as you passed the Porsche!.

                          The quote by Marc Buchannon in the Jeep about being "well and truly beaten by two birds in an old Maestro" made us all chuckle a little.

                          I guess a few entrants, (even though many were aware of both your previous achievements) thought the Maestro would be too weak to complete the course, let alone finish in the top ten.

                          I think I can confirm that everyone here is extremely proud of the both of you (and Betty).!

                          Enjoy being home, and those restful days.... You deserve them!.

                            Congratulations to you all, I'm glad it all turned out so well. It looked an amazing car and it sounds like it did you a good service. Shame about the valve, as Dan has pointed out probably down to the mechanical lift pump failing. Shame I thought an electric one was recommended.

                            I did recommend a t16 conversion to Philip on several occasions, that would have seen you into the top 10! Still it would have gotten you into trouble quicker too Now Africa will know 'Never underestimate a Maestro!' Cambridge is still learning that lesson, and long may it continue

                            • Re earlier comments: Frances Tuthill, who prepares Porsche 911s, carried out a compression test according to Jane, and decided it was indeed a valve, we shall see when it gets back. Was it due to the mechanical fuel pump? There was a Facet electric pump working in line in harmony with it, (taking the strain so to speak), but given the diaphram gives out (and it was exceedingly hot running at times), the Facet must have been doing most of the work. The car was Dyno tested twice. The HS6 carb was just about the only departure from standard on the engine and needed a bit of jetting and sorting, the fuel flow etc was indeed carefully measured. The car ran the last two days running on three cylinders, it sounded like the Subaru when it finally arrived at the Cape Town hotel. Gill drove it to the docks on her own and I watched her in the door mirror from the front of the convoy, it cut its way through the traffic ok. Its now on a boat and arrives on March 3, recrossing the Equator baking inside a container. It was washed a couple of times by local boys, and that red and white paint job that Tony and his sons attended to really stood out, a quality job and it was looking good at the finish.

                              Jane and Gill visibly enjoyed their giant-killing results. The car has done them proud, and its a result that has given the marque in general a hell of a boost in general street-cred.

                              ....It will be on the Practical Classics stand at the NEC if the Club dont get a stand (someone should be pushing for space now), and if there is a show in the general midlands area in the coming months we can get it there. Gaydon or Brooklands often have events where it could nudge its way in no doubt. Its worked incredibly hard (take a look at the dents in the floor!), and deserves a gentler life now. I suggested to Jane it ought to be retired to a museum. She looked very disappointed...

                              Finally, on the valves: Given Peter Burgess who probably really knows where to hunt for things given he plays with heads every day, and ourselves scouring ebay, failed to find any new exhaust valves, perhaps we need to find a machine shop who could make some.
