Some kind person smashed the rear quarter window on my 1990 1600 auto last night... does anybody know how difficult these are to replace please, any info gratefully received!

These windows simply *pop* out. .. Remove the small black triangle that "pops" out.. and prize the window with a small bar through this corner.
If you can get a new window , with seal would be handy..
then put some string arround the window rubber {between the "inside" and "outside"}.. place the window inside the car , with the end if the string coming through were the window should sit..
Remove the string.. by pulling it over the rubber + metal of the body.. and presto , you have a new window in
The above advice is correct. No need for any lubricant like soap etc. Fit the glass into the seal first. All you do is get some thick-ish hairy parcel twine and thread a good length into the groove in the rubber seal where it sits in the body flange, overlapping the two string ends at the bottom. Locate the seal/glass assembly on the outside of the body in the proper place with the string ends dangling inside. Pulling the string whilst simultaneously pushing hard on the glass flips the seal lips over the flange. Work all the way round pulling string, pushing the glass hard onto the body until you get to the top, where the assistance of a screwdriver may be necessary to flip the last bit of seal lip over the flange and there it is, job done. Caution - it may hurt your thumbs a bit! Take care not to tear the seal if it is getting a bit old and cracked. To remove a window from a donor car, as Graham says it will push out via sustained outwards pressure from the inside using a gloved hand and will be retrieved from outside the car. Don't let it fall....
