  • Gearbox ratio 5 speed vs 4 speed

Anyone know what the 5th gear ratio on a 97 1275 van would be?
I'm getting a donor van with one and mine only has four speed, would I get lower revs on top gear?
I've heard top gear ratio are the same on both?

97 van will be a ledbury most likely. This will have a low ratio 5 speed box. (sorry not sure of the exact ratios). You'd need to compare this to a standard van 4 speed as you might well find there isn't a lot in it.

Okay, I had a feeling that might be the case...

        Here's some data:

Regardless of 4/5 speed all the first 4 ratios are the same and 4th is 0.91:1
        5th on a 5 speeder is 0.71:1

However it is the final drive ratios that differ and can alter the gearing, as follows:

For a 1.3 saloon and 1.3 500 van, the final drive ratio is 4.25:1 (Code 6S or 6Y)
For a 1.3 700 van, the final drive ratio is lower at 4.60:1 (Code 6H)

I believe that Ledbury Maestro saloons also use the low ratio final drive.

Ahh ok so if my fag packet maths works then that means 5th on a ledbury gearbox is 15% longer than 4th on a standard 4 speed box? Is that right?

(All assumes tyre sizes are the same which isn't 100% true)
