Many owners may know this, but I found out by experience. If you remove the cable, make sure the drive is a tight fit.
I think someone had removed an o-ring from the end of the speedo cable, which meant that when I removed it in the dark, the drive didn't come out with the cable and fell into the gearbox. It reappears every now and again, but is (the Haynes manual might be right) impossible the fish out, even with very long nose pliers.
I'm not stripping the gearbox - at least until I change the clutch so I had a look online for a replacement.
I hope I have the same number of teeth on the drive: I need to check it with a sat nav.
