  • Indicator stalk not returning to neutral

    Hello,

Today I changed the steering wheel of my '86 Montego. On my first ride with the new wheel I found out that the indicators have stopped switching off automatically after a corner.
I must say I have the impression that the new (also original) wheel isn't as close to the steering column housing as the old one. Could this be the cause of the indicator fault?
Would be grateful for any useful tips.
    Thanks.

You have to make sure the wheel has a tab on it that engages with the slot on the cancelling mechanism, some wheels have two and need the lower one cut off

      Thanks Russ,

The new wheel is identical to the old wheel and has just one tab on the upper side. I believe the problem is that the tab does not reach the cancellling mechanism because the wheel is not close enough to the steering column.
Any tips to get the wheel in the right position?
      Thanks again.

        re wheel

it should just slide down the shaft and engage the tab.
are the splines ok all the way down on the new wheel as mite be damaged
        stopping it seating properly

          Hi

On earlier models there is a small degree of adjustment of the outer column as its securing bolts are fitted into slotted mounting holes, which will allow it to be brought closer to the steering wheel.

As the new wheel is identical to the old one this adjustment should not be necessary, unless the outer column was forced downward by failing to align the tang of the wheel into its slot?

One other thing to be aware of when refitting the wheel is that the cancelling mechanism collar has a raised limb on one side of it at 90 degrees from the slot. Along with locating the wheels tang into the slot this raised limb must face towards the indicator stalk. If it is in the wrong position the indicators will still fail to cancel correctly.

          Cheers.

Thanks a lot. Indeed the outer column had to be brought closer to the steering wheel. The wheel by itself was already in correct position.

Indicator is now again correctly cancelled by turning the wheel.
