Which honda engine are you fitting? I presume that your gearbox will be a PG1 type gearbox. Check out the Rover 200 mk2 as that used a 1.6 honda engine and I think was mated to a PG1 box.
Why do you specifically want a honda engine? Is there something wrong with your S series one?www.maestroturbo.org.uk - The Tickford Maestro Turbo Register

As correctly stated above, the 216 engine sits the other way, this is common with most Honda engines (they run backwards too!!!).
A possible option is to fit a K-series lump, which if cared for should give good service. I have recently purchased a one owner 1998 218iS with 125k miles on the clock and it runs like a dream.
Kerb weight for the Montego and 218 are both around 1050-1100kgs, so I guess it would make the montego fly too
The 218 also uses the PG1 gearbox, it would just be a case of comparing wiring for the ECU.
Note though, if your Monty is an earlier "Austin" version (pre-89), then it will have the VW gearbox, and hence driveshafts etc will differ.Neil

thanks for the reply you guys..i still haven't change the engine..i wanted and easy swap..i was thinking of putting a toyota corolla 5e-fe engine in it..then i figured it would be too much work....I love the car..i wana keep it..but not with the original engine..i have a head gasket oil and coolant leak on it..only when i rev it in the red-line though..Need some more trouble free speed and pwer.

these engines are from maestros and montegos mate.... rover k series units will prolly fit no worries or if you find a rover t series turbo engine (2.0 i turbo) that would fit and it would be a v fast monty 0r lternitivly the t series nsap engine would give performance
good luck mate

mods to my 216s..platinum +2 spark plugs, greddy 8mm core silicone wires..2 1/4" exhaust.and i run fully synthetic oil in it..engine perfectly clean(spotless) apart from when i high rev it...i love to race hondas..if i could only get even a good head-gasket to stop these leaks at high rpm..i would keep my car forever..i get lots of credit for how well kept my car is.and often shock people when they see my little engine.

There is a whole race series over in the UK that has 1.6 and 2 litre maestros running in it. When races they do tend to blow a little oil, and the S series engine tends to leak like a seive anyway especially if the breather system is anyway restricted. headgaskets are easy to change and available on e-bay if you don't have a local rover dealer.
There is plenty you can do to make them go a lot faster if that is what you want but it will involve modifying the engine itself.www.maestroturbo.org.uk - The Tickford Maestro Turbo Register
