  • another rally car rebuild!

well, after navigating for my dad in his mk2 escort on last Decembers Christmas stages rally, i decided it is time to get the pink beast rebuilt so i can sit in the right seat next time! last time the maestro was out, christmas 2014, we went off and ran some tyres over, bending the front suspension and rack. on closer inspection, the shell has seen better days and needs a lot of repairs, hence the ride in the wrong seat! when i bought the car over 7 years ago, i fully intended reshelling it sooner rather than later, as it was rough then! the car proved so reliable i never got round to it, although i've had a shell sat there ready for nearly 7 years. anyway, after seeing Ross's rebuild thread, i've got motivated to start mine.
haven't done much yet, bought new intercooler and tried to make it fit. pictures to follow

e-bay! needed a new one as the original one was a bit bent and couldn't really be made to fit as neatly as this one. the other one had the inlet and outlet at the same end and bent through 90*. this one should flow better.

Looking forward to watching this progress! Glad I gave you motivation. Thats what I love about forums. Although other peoples threads encourage you to empty your wallet too

yes! although i'm going back to standard bumpers. the 820 motor is being replaced with a 620ti motor and there will be a few more mods that will be revealed as the project progresses.

I think you'll need to bend that before it will fit in

Hope you get it competition ship shape soon, I enjoyed watching it. Might I see you at croft next winter? How come your wanting to not use the Tickford kit this time round? I think it really suits it, especially on a pink rally car!

andy, love the picture! the plan is to get it ready for the xmas stages. the only tickford bit is the rear bumper! they are montego sills and subaru impezza bumper. the 'bodykit' is looking very tatty now and the plan is that if standard bumpers fit, modded ones will go straight on. also, i have loads of spare front and rear standard bumpers!!!

after buying the roll cage tube, the guy who was going to bend it for me realized his PIPE bender wouldn't bend it without kinking it. as i suspected this, i'd asked the people i got the tube off if they would do it. they said yes, if there was a problem, they would do it if i took the shell to them for £300. they then wanted a few days to do it and when i said 'can't you do it in one day?' the price went up to £400 + vat!!!!!! so, spent a while trying to find somewhere closer to do it and came up blank. anyway, if you want something done, do it yourself! bought myself a bender from america and cracked on! i'm getting a local engineering firm to do the welding

Looking good Martin. Looks strong with the triangulation. I see holes in the rear tub so im guessing its getting bolted in?

no mate! was originally putting a bolt-in cage in about 6 years ago
it's all getting welded in. all the bent bits are done, all the other bits are straight. i'll post pics as i go along. things should move a bit quicker now
