  • [Wanted] strut nuts

Im trying to swap the front struts on my maestro, but tonight discovered the springs are held on by a silly nut!

Where can i buy new ones, as ive mangled one trying to get it off, and where can i buy or borrow a tool ?

    Thanks

    John

You can buy the tool (its a VW one) but once the springs are compressed a simple tap with a screwdriver releases it to unscrew by hand.

You can also grind two nibs onto an old big nut to undo it too if you prefer.

I made my own tool. Ground two sides of a spanner off on the bench grinder leaving two raised bits which slot into the "silly nut"

I had the spring compressed tonight, and went at it with a screwdriver, but I've took a chunk out the nut with the screwdriver!

Spoke with a mate, he has a vw tool I can borrow!

        Do the vw nuts fit?

They are probably the same nuts! Certainly the top bearings are I checked part numbers and they refer to both cars. Golf and Montego/Maestro

I got mine from halfords a while back. If you google "sykes and pickavant strut removal" loads come up on ebay etc.

I've done loads and never needed more than a pair of mole grips

Likewise, I've possibly changed more springs and struts than most on montegos. The idea of spending £16 on something that does it properly when molegrips will do is totally beyond me!
