In other words, the car's ID as a genuine MG Turbo. That's how you end up with VIN plates and V5s from valuable cars like Lotus Cortinas bringing eye-watering sums on eBay. I'll let you guess what the buyers are doing with them. Put it this way they're not putting them in a glass cabinet on display.
Certainly the pedantic way of looking at it IS that it's the V5 and VIN, however I'm talking in realistic terms what sets the Turbo apart (as I'm sure you were aware I was).

Of course it's up to people what they do with their own things, but if you compare owning a rare piece to that of say, an antique or a piece of furniture. The minute you swap the doors or hinges on a Queen Anne cabinet for instance to something more 'useable everyday' you'll see what happens to the value. I don't see how T16-ing an original turbo is any different to that personally.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion though

I think the view is that so long as you haven't 'over done it' (aka chavved it up) then most mods can be undone, so on the whole the car hasn't been irreversibly changed. I said "I think" because modding is certainly not my specialist subject. One of my MG Turbos is factory standard and the other 'highly-modded' one is only different by it having a late-spec dash, MGF Abingdon alloys and no rubbing strips, so I'm certainly not 'king of modders'

ihmo, i would say this car is 'over done'

if it has a Rover T16 engine, then technically its not a maestro turbo anymore is it?

Its just a maestro shell with a different engine in. the V5 is about all its worth for. and thats not worth that much

Well technically it is as it's a Maestro shell with a turbo engine, so technically yes it is a Maestro Turbo.

Let's face it, these things aren't Auto Unions and it will be years away yet before even a mint restored one is worth 10k+, and even then if it has new doors, sills and replacement/rebuilt O-series it isn't original. Even a numbers-matching car wouldn't be extra special, even a black one!

I'd rather spend 6 grand and use it properly than spend 6 grand and hide the thing in a garage in fear a devaluing it! In terms of how many cars are left to how many realistic buyers there are there's still plenty to go around. There's too many crumbling away whilst people try and make them original and more valuable, then they just end up as a pile of iron oxide on the garage floor and another one ticked off the DVLA's list.
