Open you eyes Steve, maybe you should get out and drive to the South Coast, Devon and Cornwall is very scenic for example.

This summer, I r mostly spent a fair few weekends and our annual holiday driving around South Wales - over the Brecons etc.

Apart from the over zealous policing of speed limits, top place if scenery is your thang.

What first opened my eyes to how beautiful much of the UK is, was riding a moped from Brighton to Manchester back in 1990 (I know, I know... but mopeds can't use motorways so A-roads all the way!). 305 miles, 12 hours - as fast as the direct train! And with a stopover at Copt Oak Youth Hostel and food and drink, the whole trip cost me £7 as opposed to £46 by train .

I've driven extensively in North and mid-Wales and Northumberland and the Borders while Radio-Marshalling on Rallies, and there's lots of stunning scenery and friendly locals. Locally I am spoilt by the Peak and Lake Districts... but there's so much to see, in so many places.

This year's eye-opener for me was Staples2Naples in Jonah, a scabby M-reg Monty TD LX Estate with a heart of gold... Jeez, the TD engine pulled so well up the Swiss and Italian passes! Read my blogs on here for more thoughts on this .

The scenery in Switzerland and Italy blew my mind - but the drive back on N- and D-roads across France was beautiful too, funny thing is that the UK can match this beauty in many places, often in areas that one wouldn't expect!

God, I miss Jonah!!! Wouldn't be without Monty, my 1.6L Saloon though...

As for my moped exploits, my back's never been the same since :laugh: . I used to do 50 or 60 miles most Sundays tootling around east Sussex - often round the back of the South Downs or to Beachy Head, these roads would be worth a road run and then there's the Harveys Beers from Lewes to sample at night... happy days!

I'd be up for it too, depending on dates of course - I need lots of notice cos I'm a shift worker and I work about half my weekends.

There are wonderful places to visit all over Britain - I've seen lots of them on a bike doing the Round Britain Rally

Cotswolds are nice and spread from midlands to south. If you leave it until summer 2165 then I *might* have my car back on the road by then, but I seriously doubt it. Why not do Longbridge-Cowley-Ledbury and back? That'd be one heck of a nice run!

Ooh! Now that sounds like an excellent drive. Perhaps it could go from Longbridge, through the Cowley area and end at a nice pub in ledbury (or close to)

Or maybe Longbridge to Ledbury, taking an extended route through some of the country?

I was thinking about an 'around the island' run - £30 each to get the car ferry over, fantastic roads, great views... and you can't get more southern than that!

Cowley you might get away with saying south but the rest are firmly planted in the midlands. It would make a good run though, up from Oxford towards Evesham and down devils staircase... or is it up? Either way its a good road.
