  • Jum home and looking good!!!!

This is how Jum looks now. Even my eyes nearly popped out of my head when I fitted the new wheels!!! The photo's don't do the car justice, it really does look the dog's danglers! Will try and get some better pics.
However, still lots to do, including a problem which I think is fuel related. The car starts fine and ticks over fine. When I drove it home though it kept developing a splutter, as though it was running on two or three cylinders. This would occur each time I went to set off after being caught in traffic. ie when you just get the clutch to bite you then need to rev the b@ll@cks off it as it drops to two cylinders but then picks back up to four after dabbing the throttle a revving profusely. Anyone any ideas? Apart from that the engine runs fine, but I'm gonna get it fine tuned. Need to sort this before saloon day!

Holy Moses you must be very happy with that! What are those wheels? They set it off an absolute treat

I'm glad it's been worth the wait. Surely everyone's head will turn when they see you out and about in that!!

Looking forward to seeing it at MGSD.

Thanks John. Must admit, it even turns my head! I've spent most of the day lurking around my driveway with my eyes fixated on the car! The neighbours must think I'm mad. Even I am starting to question my sanity!
Unfortunately if I was out and about in it now, it would probably only turn heads cos I'm having to rev it profusely when it decides it's gonna show me up and run on two cylinders, then suddenly run on all four again and take off, making me look like a right plonker! Will have to sort this pronto. Tonight did find a split in the pipe that goes from plenum to fuel pressure regulator ( I think) but don't think this has cured it. This is the pipe I 'T'd the boost gauge into, but there also seems to be fuel seeping out of it?!
I cheated a bit on the wheels. They are aftermarket 7.5x18 for Vauxhall Vectra/Astra 4 stud fitted by using German made PCD adaptors by H&R for the Lotus Elise/MGF, but are excellent quality and take minutes to fit.
Hoping to get all other jobs done in next couple of weeks.

Chrise, I hope you have some decent locking nuts on those wheels!

18s... aren't they making the car sit a bit high? Or 'normal' height.
You need a bodykit on that in my humble opinion then it wouldn't need lowering (is it lowered, if so 18s are out for me. What profile are they, 40s or 45s? - would look absolutely cracking with a W&P kit but then you have that boot spoiler, it's all painted beautifully, so probably best to leave well alone?

I'm just jealous if the truth was known

Re rough running. Remember it's been off road a long time, all that paint spray, and dust everywhere... Cars hate not being used, when I started one of mine that had been off-road for 2+ years it sounded like it was running on one cylinder! Sediment in the swirl pot had solidified so fuel was not getting through. I by-passed the 2 fuel pipe feeds (can't remember what I did about the top pipe? but it ran better (well, on four). I got another swirl pot secondhand and b*gger me, that was full of sediment too. I flushed it out with neat fuel, but even when it had dried if I tapped it gently then blew through it a cloud of white dust would come out.
Can you still get swirl pots new?

Thanks for all the comments guys.
Oseerees, the car has 2" lower springs and I also fitted the lowest seat height shocks all round, so it's as low as you can normally go. The tyres are 215/35/18 and are just 10mm bigger in diameter than the original 195/55/15. I had the lip on the rear arch cut back so they won't scuff.
As far as bodykit goes, I must admit I prefer the original bumpers and front air dam, but I plumped for a Tomcat rear spoiler ( £15 on ebay!) which needed only slight mod to each end to follow Montego's slightly different contour. In fact apart from the boot spoiler, lowered suspension and wheels, the car is standard MG complete with red stripes! btw, the original bumper inserts cleaned up a treat once removed. I couldn't get hold of these new in the correct size, but luckily the faded 'milky' red colour buffed out.
If I see a bodykit for sale I may buy one just in case I change my mind though!
Interesting comments on the fuel/carb. I think I'll take it for a tune up and see what they say.

Unfortunately Jum still aint running right. On Thursday, the tuning specialist said I had a carb problem ( at mid revs excess fuel is getting dumped into the combustion chambers) but was reluctant to investigate further through fear of getting hold of parts and time required. He adjusted the carb as best he could but the fault is still there. I started to drive it home, but it kept developing the splutter and several times nearly cut out in rush hour traffic. I wasn't far from my mate at the bodyshop, so I stopped by. His mate over the road who is a mechanic came out and had a quick look and said the carb probably needs stripping and cleaning out. He kindly let me leave the car with him with a view to stripping the carb today.
Today the light at the end of the tunnel hopefully has appeared. Although he described the carb as knackered! this wasn't the problem. The fuel regulator aint regulating! Fuel at high pressure is getting through to the carb and finding it's way up every other conceivable pipe and vacuum tube including the waste gate and boost gauge. Lot's of ringing round today and I found a place in Middlesex who still sell them for the Monty turbo! Excellent! It's being delivered to the garage hopefully on Monday, so fingers crossed. He's also agreed to get it MOT'd if it runs ok. Watch this space Oh, and luckily I bought a spare carb a few months ago, so that was fitted today.
