  • Practical Classics - July 2014 issue

In the current Practical Classics (July 2014) there is an article called "MG V The World" which compares various MG models from 1950's onwards against the several rivals of that decade.

It finishes with the late 1980's and features the MG Maestro turbo against the VW Golf GTi Mk2 and the Ford Escort RS Turbo.

It's quite a good write up and the car stacks up well against it's rivals and it is certainly a very fast and exclusive animal.

It's a pity that they didn't expand the article to accommodate the MG Metro, Montego and Maestro (1.6/2.0i) derivatives.

Worth a quick look when you are next in Smiths, page 30.

I agree. The MG Maestro 2.0i in particular has always been a personal favourite of mine due to its well mannered chassis, lovely low-down torque delivery and eager response. The rumble and grunt from its engine I also found to be more pronounced than of the MG Turbo version.

I guess that a second after reading about the MG Maestro, the Golf GTi will be along?

I have just sneaked a viewing of said publication and it covers just under half a page in terms of text and a side-on shot of the aforementioned British Racing Green example. It reads okay but does not add anything new to what has previously been written about the Maestro MG Turbo by other publications and journalists.

When the as campaign 'the golf GTi will be along in a second' was current me and a mate who also had an EFi had a stack of photocopies of it and used to stick them and the wipers of another mate's GTi
