  • Nobody wants it.

Has anyone had trouble getting rid of their unwanted Montego or Maestro.
I have found my Monty very hard to shift. I've asked people at work, placed
ads in shop windows and local free newspapers and put an ad on usedcar-
mart.com, with absolutely ZERO response. Is this typical or just bad luck?
I am going to learn about how to sell cars on E-Bay, I will keep
you all posted on how I get on.

You are doing it wrong, that is why you haven't sold it. When you sell a car try to think what it is that appeals to you. A clean car is a good start. An exceptionally clean car puts you ahead of the others.

Give your car a thumping great clean - and I mean a really good one, repaint old wheels silver, lots of polish, tyre black, hoover, brush the dirt off the airvents and all interior plastics, vax the seats, & under the seats, use a trim blacking product, clean the windows using Windowlene and newspaper (comes up a treat), black stonechip is great for making the underside look fresh, and it protects the car too. Touch up all the paint chips too remember. Then take lots of photo's in a pleasant setting. Make it looked cared for and loved.

Make sure it drives well too.

Then e-bay it. Write a full description, grammatically correct and with as few spelling mistakes as possible, listing the good bits first with good long descriptions, and just one liners for the downsides. Put your telephone number on it and make sure you answer it, and any e-mails. Sell if you get offered what you are looking for, do not always wait 'till the end of the auction - but announce that on the auction that you have it for sale elsewhere.

It works. Look how a really ropey looking Trroper found on e-bay (photographed whilsat still inside the garage, with catprints on the bonnet and looking derelict) turned out after a morning cleaning:
          Now this is clean!

Also make sure it has plenty of MOT, no good putting MOT 1 month will pass easy - if it will, why didn't you as you will get much more for an MOT'd car. Takes a bit of effort and a small amount of money for paint & polish and the odd trim bit from a scrapyard maybe, but I have done this with 4 cars in the last 7 months and made a profit on all of them. The previous owners could have done too if they had been bothered!

          Good luck!

            The down side.

Right now I would consider any offer seriously, the car is taxed until end of
March & M.O.T until March 15th. The radiator is 2 months old, exhaust, tyres,
alternator and battery are about 18 months old. There is 97k on the clock,
the engine starts 1st time & is not smokey. The major problem is the water
pump, which is leaky and my reason for selling it.
I have owned the car since 2001 and am the 2nd owner, an interesting piece
of history is the original service book, it's first service stamp is from a Rover
dealership in Perigueux (South of France) so is the 4th stamp, the intermediate
stamps are from a garage in Aldershot. Somebody really had big faith in their Montego!

Another aid to selling the car is to take high quality photos of the car. Make sure the car fills the photo frame and include shots of each side, under the bonnet and interior. Try to make the shots well lit. The current pictures dont do the car justice: all the straight edges look wonky.

With all due respect Gary a few people have posted on here regarding what you need to do to get a good price...put a bit of the suggested effort in and you may see some significant advances on your current offer.

                        Selling the car

People at work, friends shop windows, etc. - not a big enough audience. Usedcar-mart.com - not a site I have heard of and it's probably used by people looking for 3yr old VW Polos and the like - not 15yr old Montegos.

Place an ad on the classifieds section of this site - then you've got a fairly big audience of people looking for Montegos and Maestros. Offer it with longer tax and MOT and name your price with ONO if you would be willing to compromise a bit.

Also - your picture is taken in the rain anad the car is dirty. Look at these -which would you buy?

Get a tooth brush and some T-cut, and rub those rust stains, most will come out and make it look alot better.

                            Nice suggestions!

Yes! a lot of good advice, toothbrush & T-cut those nasty stains away, get Bailey to do the well lit pictures with the stately home as the back drop, arrogantly judge others websites even though we have no knowledge of them.

Outside of a small band of enthusiasts the Montego has no real value, most motorists would like something more modern to drive and unless forced by personal poverty, most do.

The mere mention of the word Montego has most people grabbing at two straight objects in order to form a cross shape, as they make there escape.

If any car was the British "Skoda" then this was it.

If I were asking £600 then surely I would black the tyres, pay £19.00 to advertise it on a better website and use better pics etc, but let's get real, it is a "Montego", and as such will only have limited appeal among a small fan base.

All I want is £60.00p not £600, not really allowing much investment for a major advertising campaign.

If you can't sell a Montego in it's natural state (not tarted up), on a website populated by fans of these cars, for just £60 then something is VERY WRONG!

And as for getting it M.O.T'd for another year and asking a higher price, I'm just to busy to bother.

I will leave that job to the enthusiast.
