anyone know anything about these, as fitted to Maestro's and Montego's back in the day, do you have one fitted, are they Motorola based

Never had one, or seen one come to that, but guessing that if they were from the mid 80's might have been Racal, as they started vodafone and I think would be making some of the hardware themselves then.
