It's amazing what gets thrown away with the rubbish. Definately a case of someone being in the right place at the right time!

Looking forward to having a closer look sometime.

I was in the right place at the right time...looking for an elec.sunroof motor! I last saw an HLS in Stick's Autobreakers in 1998 which was oh so retro Gold with brown upholstery. Nowhere near the condition of this latest find though. Did Ed tell you about it having a full set of original keys...the service book...

This scrapyard is chock full of R8's and R800's. Mondeo's are pretty numerous, too. It's enough to make my hair fall out!

Simon, I forgot to mention that aside from the service book and receipts in the glovebox, the chap in the office handed my a whole wedge of history and paperwork for it, covering work done from 1991 to 2005. Serious reading material and the car has had thousands spent on it. Can you believe the scrapyard man had thrown all of this in the bin and he had to fish it out for me!

Blimey! What on earth was the HLS doing in the scrapyard in the first place?

It makes you wonder... Rich Gelder and I were at a local scrapyard on Sunday, and there was an immaculate Rover 820SI in there, the date mark from when it was brought in was saturday... it was complete aside from the cd changer! the data cable and head unit were still in there though...! Probably someone just decided they couldn't afford/be bothered changing the head gasket?

I can only guess that perhaps the original owner passed away and his family wanted the car gone, and seeing that it was 21 years old, just decided to get rid of it. Its also possible that the car was part-exchanged and just scrapped by whoever took it. Who knows. Whatever the reason, this car was far too good to end up in there and its a good job Simon happened to be visiting the yard otherwise it would certainly be a goner.

I've had a good poke about the car today. Its polished up great. Unfortunately she is going to need a bit more welding than expected. Its the age old theory that a small hole always ends up being a very large one. It will need a small patch on the passenger side inner rear arch (easy) and it will need the drivers side rear end of the sill rebuilding (pretty standard stuff) but the worst is the petrol filler area on the inside of the inner arch. This has totally gone and I am now certain that I will have to fit a whole near rear quarter as its the only way I imagine it could be repaired to the standard that I want to car to be in. I just hope I can still grab one of the rear quarters that were for sale, I will be on the phone tomorrow.

Other than that, no other nasty surprises and the rest of the body seems solid and all other surface rust can be tackled by me at home before respray. I will keep you posted.

If you plan on asking Rover for a rear quarter Ed, be prepared to pay full price, as the price stated in the previous attempt to aquire these panels was a one off based on buying all remaining stock(25) of O/side rear panels.

                            Mal.

Cheers Mal. I am collecting a new rear quarter tomorrow as listed elsewhere on the site, this should hopefully do the trick.

                                Hi Ed
Is it the same man as mine that you got the panel from?
