  • Rover 25 issues

    Hi all

My Girlfriends rover 25 1.4 (84bhp) is playing up at the mo unfortunatly.

    symptoms -

it 'misses' on acceleration and sort of coughs

also when its idleing, i can hear a clicking noise everyso often which coincides with the engine 'missing' or coughing.

    any help greatly appreciated

    cheers

    Ben

    Ugh, tell me about it...

Does she run it low on fuel, ever? Mine clogged up and died on me yesterday, presumably due to being low on fuel and sucking up dirt from the tank. If so, you could try putting fresh fuel in and 'clearing it out' like I did.

If not, when was it last serviced? The spark plugs might need cleaning/replacing...

Not sure about the clicking but I've noticed this on our 1.8 K series, too.

One problem me and the missus found with our old K series 400 was that around a year to 16 months after a service it would act the same as described and needed new plug leads.

No idea why it did it, but once the leads where replaced all was well for another 12 months or so.

In the end, we paid out for a top notch set of bosch leads which seamed to last a while longer (approx 18-20 months)before the symptoms arose again.

Even changing the coil and plugs seamed to make no difference, it just 'ate' plug leads.

As above from Mal, my 2 Metro Gti's both had misfiring problems and I gave them both a service complete with new plugs and leads. The leads seemed to be the problem (Insulation was breaking down on them), stick a new decent set on it and you should find the problem goes away.

            thanks chaps

im gonna sort it out tomorow whilst my missus is at work

apparently there are two different set ups leads wise

you have the two lead set up and 5 lead set up

im assuming the 2 lead is for a coil pack and the 5 lead is for a dizzy?

            cheers all

Is it sometimes reluctant to start from cold?

If so it could be the Head Gasket. I have had alot of experience with HG issues on the K-series, and its not always obvious you have a HG problem until you see that the oil and water are the same colour!!

I ended up fitting a LandRover designed K-series HG to my Rover 216 race car, and it has been totally reliable since.

***WARNING*** Don't use an MG Rover supplied HG (or eBay cr*p), the LR ones are the only ones that get rid of K-series issues, and they are only £23 for an LR dealer. The LR HG design will be featuring on all Euro4 K-series engines when NAC-MG release the new models next year.

Faulty crank sensor is another possibility.
