I can't find anything to put you off, it's a good job, well paid but the marking and preparation does eat into your free time a bit. I've been teaching for almost 20 years now!

A very good female friend of mine started teaching in September, sadly though she's finding it very hard going.
She reports an average of three-four hours per evening spent on marking and preparation.
It's getting here down so much she's considering quitting come summer.

I'm encouraging her to stick with it, hoping it will get easier with time

Car mechanics seem to be lacking a bit so far.... Probably you wouldn't have choosen a Maestro as a hobby then...

So I am working in research at the university of technology Aachen (I am supposed to do some courses also, but not at the moment). As a mathematician I do calculations involving ridiculous amounts of numbers, mostly to establish a bit of knowledge about the influence of the elastic bending of an airplan's wing on it's ability to fly. So the use of tools and spanners is a hobby thing for me.

I'm an Environmental Health Officer by trade but have now risen to the dizzy heights of Environmental Protection Manager which involves the management of the pollution team, the dog warden, the pest control team and a gypsy traveller site in a Local Authority.

Everyone thinks it funny that I manage the pollution team and then have a smoky diesel Maestro!

Was talking to a friend of a friend in a pub once, and asked him what his occupation was. As you do.

"I'm in youth corrections!" he replied in an animated fashion.

"Youth corrections?" I said as I choked on a mouthful of beer...

"I teach high school kids in inner city Salford" he explained.

I work as a Local Authority Technical Clerk, on the Council Housing Repairs Helpdesk, and have done this role (in various forms) for over eight years. I love the public (honest ! ) but would rather deal with them face to face (rather than on the phone) as it's loadsa fun screwing their narrow little minds up with your body language (especially when there's no bullet proof glass in the way!).

Am looking for a career change but short of ideas. Have considered teaching, but graduates of the part-time 'junior' course are having trouble getting jobs at the end of it, and the local council is looking to run down 4 of its high schools (10% of the total) with closure in 5 years so it looks like a narrowing market to me. If only I'd done my PGCE when I graduated in '91 ...

I hadn't heard of Hyperion until recently: you very nearly won the MOD contract to supply it with planning, forecasting and budgeting software but in the end they chose Cognos

I think I could cope with working 9am -3.30pm with an hour for lunch, 13 weeks holiday and every weekend off, if all I have to do is an extra 3-4 hours (which brings to about a real world working day) .

I work for npower as a power station operator and a C&I Technician.

Absolutely, it's a good old job, well paid too! By and large the pupils are positive and generally well behaved. One needs to prepare well to do the job properly - any job not just teaching.

It's a pretty varied list so far.

I'm a project manager working in Siemens for the Broadcast industry. Used to be in the BBC until they sold us off, but that's another story. And yes, it was me that made the final link to put UKTV on air.
