  • Hello from Oxford

Living across from the Cowley factory as a nipper and having a large % of my family employed at BL / Austin Rover all our family cars were bought via the Employee car purchase scheme so we had Marinas,Maxis,SD1 and Maestro I can remember, all picked up from Hartwell Cowley I think.

My first car was an Allegro bought within an hour of passing my test soon replaced with a Metro Turbo ( A489 GPK ) and then a Montego Turbo ( D985 BOY ) which I kept until I got a company car around the age of 23 when I ended up after a few years as a sales exec at Hartwell Abingdon driving Rover 400, 600 and 75's and was there for the demise of the brand and the blue oval continued its dominance by taking over the showroom.

I now have an other C Plate Montego Turbo in Azure blue, sadly not white like my original one but beggars cant be choosers, bad timing as I am halfway through restoring a Reliant Rialto which lost the fight for who gets the garage.

She needs a little bit of love in places but overall is very tidy, has a broken unobtanuim centre console only seen in the Turbo and VP it seems, a fuse box cover for under the dash by the drivers knees and I could do with some external rear window trims as I imagine they will break when I pull them off to do a little rot prevention ( Ironically this was the only place my old Monty had any rust before I sold it ) but none of this is desperate or makes it un-driveable.

Has the incorrect speakers in the rear so the covers don't fit but luckily the aperture hasn't been altered so I can put it back to standard along with the the original radio cassette.

Added bonus of being tax and MOT exempt and the insurance cost is a pleasant shock at £80 a year fully comp with a guaranteed value which is a welcome cost saving.

Will look to take some pictures and do some updates as and when I pull bits off it.

    Pat.

That's a very rare colour turbo you have there. Yes put loads of pictures up. There is a company reproducing the rear quarter trims. Where did you pick that up from, was it car and classic ?

Hi Jeff, be good to know who repro;s the trims as I expect to snap the clips off them at least pulling them off but its got to be done at some point even though the single bubble is only 2MM at best, Obviously would prefer to keep the originals but I think its unlikely they will give up easily.

Yes was the one on car and classic, I have seen it on Ebay and a few other places before but I had a budget and i felt the prices it was being offered for previously was a touch spicy so left it whereas the C&C price was more in my personal expectation of what it was worth hence why its now in my garage.

Had to drag it down from Scotland to Oxford which didn't help but its not like they come up for sale very often in this condition and price point , its 99% there so not much needed to get it to where I'm happy.

I fixed the centre console as luckily the broken bits were on the transmission tunnel when I removed it so they has been repaired ,I have the slam panel removed currently and that is being stripped and repainted as it was scruffy, will then move onto the couple of bubbles elsewhere, one on the OS A post which is 3mm and I have a NOS scuttle panel which came with the car and a windscreen trim from Rimmers so access wont be a problem for a nice finish, same with a small bubble on the boot lid which is no bother.

I have a Micro fiche reader and the slides for the car which is very useful to get part numbers as It seems a lot of bits out there are listed part number only and not fitment especially the smaller clips and trim parts, I picked up a NOS wing mirror cover factory painted for cheaper than it would cost to get the scuffed one on the car redone.

Have a NOS water pump and both aux belts but will likely fit a gates cam belt kit rather than a 40 year old one as I don't know when it was done , last invoice I have for the belt was 2015 so Ill change it even though its done next to no miles since then, oil is still golden so will leave that for now.

I'm terrible for "before and after" pictures as I get carried away but will do my best to give updates as i go.

      pat.

Yes I thought it might be Ricks old turbo. The Rimmers windscreen surround isn't very good as I've tried one of those before. Good idea to change the belt as you don't know if it's going to last and a new one is a better bet than an older one.
The seller I think said it's original paint and never welded but you should see in the paperwork that the rear wing was replaced under warranty

Thanks Jeff,I took the original paint comment in the sale with a pinch of salt as unless you bough the car from new how can you prove it?, I did see in the history it had a 1/4 replaced months after it was registered, I guess it was fitted badly on the production line and either gave a shocking panel gap or a terrible repair they tried to get away with in the factory and got caught out when the filler fell out after a heavy boot slam.

I will likely end up painting from the boot lid up over the entire roof down to the A pillars anyway but I work in the trade so have a body shop who will paint it as good if not better than original and definitely better than whoever painted the roof panel last time and couldn't be bothered to take the roof antenna off!

I expected it to have had a life prior to my ownership, I live round the corner from Black bird Leys where many ended shiny side down pretty much every weekend and I cant imagine this one got through that period totally unscathed.

Will see what the screen seal looks like when it arrives, I thought i was supposed to be NOS but i didn't really look closely, the one fitted is fine so I may be more careful removing it than I would be if I was replacing it.

Will get a little list of bits and bobs I will be on the look out for and I apologise in advance as I will be on at you incessantly about where I can source what I need.

So far I have on the parts list:

          Fusebox cover under dash.
Rear window top trim and rear 1/4 window trims
Sunroof seal ( goes around the metal panel ) Looks generic so I guess I can find one for a BM or a VW that will do if I cant find a proper one, only changing as will remove it to paint the panel.
Oh and a bonnet stay clip as I lent on it ......

Bits I have got round to or are on ze list:

          Repair centre console
replace number plate lights with NOS units
replace bonnet pull lever which was damaged.
Strip and repaint slam panel and a couple of other scruffy bits under the bonnet.
Replace modern head unit and replace with a more "period" Pioneer KEH-M9100 flip front tape deck plus CD multi changer in the boot.
Change drive belts, cam belt, tensioner and water pump.
Couple of small dash cracks filled, textured and colour matched.( not by me I might add by a specialist trim repair comany )
Remove seats and get covers "tightened" as the standard slightly saggy look messes with my OCD.

I am also 50-50 on colour coordinating the rear spoiler and getting the rear windows tinted, not factory standard but think it would suit the car.

As per my original post I am also knee deep into a restore on a Reliant Rialto which is more intense than the Monty but can drag out a year so it tumbles into Tax and MOT exemption as three wheel MOT centres near me are few and far between!

I think I have a fuse box cover somewhere in what's left of my spares, sunroof seal is the same as a Golf, I have a bonnet staying clip but in black, bonnet pull lever I may also have,

Again Thanks for the reply Jeff,

I have a new bonnet lever but I will take a stay clip and a fuse box cover if you manage to find one obviously no rush they wont stop me moving forward with the rest of the tinkering
I will PM you with my details and can get you some cash over as and when suits you, if you can shed any light on who repro'd the rear screen trims that would be a big help as I would like to get the paint sorted as my next chunky task.

I will post in the correct forum moving forward for help etc so my intro post isn't longer than the LOTR trilogy.

              Thanks again Jeff.

              Pat.
