efi has failed mot on emissions. totally off the scale for some reason. any ideas appreciated, martin

I would first be looking at what the fuel pressure reading is. Does it have a standard fuel pressure regulator fitted?
Check the coolant temp gauge is reading correctly
Check the fuel rail temp switch is not short circuit.
Check the camshaft timing is correct.
Does the engine also have a misfire?
Do the readings come down into scale on the fast idle test?
It is possible that the fuel injection ECU is faulty.
