Hi after all these years car failed MOT got vented brake caliper mounting brackets with solid calipers has anyone got brackets which are for solid brakes gutting that since I have owned this car garage hasn't picked up on this each mot until now
If you can't find the brackets another option would be to fit vented discs, I suspect that your calipers must also be for the vented discs to have failed an MOT? If calipers are vented ones, then changing the discs might be the cheaper option https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351222068583
No it has got solid brake calipers and vented carrier mounting brackets would vented discs still fit solid calipers?
No, the ventilated discs are about 10mm thicker, so new pads wouldn't fit. I am not entirely convinced that it is possible to fit the vented carrier brackets to a non vented set up, I think I once tried to do this on a van, not realising that I had the wrong carrier. As far as I know all of the ventilated carriers have a piece of the casting connecting the two sliding pin supports on the outside of the disc & iirc this interfered with fitting them to a solid disc. I have attached a photo of the Haynes pictures of non vented and vented ones, which show the difference,if you only have a Maestro book it doesn't show the vented ones (& Montego one doesn't show solid ones). The factory manual is similarly light on detail and doesn't have photos. If it had vented calipers I could see why it'd fail a test, as the piston would come out too far when the pads were worn, but I'm not sure what exactly would happen if it just had the vented brackets. Probably worth checking that it really has got the wrong ones on, even MOT testers sometimes make mistakes.... I've got one of my cars on a lift with front wheels off, so can get some dimensions if you like, it has solid discs, so should be the same as yours. Seems odd that it has passed before & presumably the brakes haven't failed or done anything that alarmed you in the meantime.
The first picture with vented discs is the brackets which are on my car it definitely has solid calipers and solid discs that has been like that since I bought the car.
Excellent! I'm still not sure If I've got any here, but I do know that if I have they are not in the easy to get at pile...one day I'll get it sorted out so I know where things are....
