The WFM number is the part number of the block actually cast into it.

C35 relates to the engine spec, ie non-unleaded spec. E54 is an unleaded spec prefix.

'H' of 12H refers to the engine being mounted 'horizontally' (transversely) in the bodyshell when the car is viewed 'in plan' with the front of the car at the top or bottom of the 'plan' - a front wheel drive BMC/BLMC/ARG car.

'V' would refer to the engine being mounted vertically as viewed 'in plan' as above (ie mounted 'in line' in the body shell - so it's a rear wheel drive BMC/BLMC/ARG car), eg an engine number starting 12V in an MG Midget 1275, or 18V in a Marina 1800.

Why, oh why, did you not simply look at the V5? Assuming you have a V5 and can read...

...because he was confused as to what was the actual engine number. He therefore asked on this technical forum. He also got an answer, a very informative one I might add. The additional snippets will also, no doubt, further inform other people.

Can you ever make a post without sniping or making someone try and feel stupid? If i can manage it, so can you. He is young, trying to learn and asked a reasonable question, for all we know the engine may not be original and the number not even changed on the V5...

I fully endorse your response. I for one am now wiser than I was from the very informed replies and will now not end up buying an unleaded engine.

The unleaded engines are the better ones to have as they won't suffer from valve seat recession.

Cheers Rich, I knew the H was for transverse, but I didn't know what letter they used for the in-line engines. I guess you learn something new every day

True, although they upgraded the valve seats the valves themselves were not upgraded so these can still burn out on hard worked engines.

Dont forget the earlier heads (pre-unleaded and post 84) used the bigger valve head, i drove my 1.3 for many hard miles on unleaded with a VSR additive and was no worse than when it was on leaded, which at the time, could still allow valves and seats to burn out because they lowered the lead content.

He made himself look stupid by making no attempt to answer his own question. Even more so as he appears to work in the trade. People learn far more by being made to think rather than being spoon-fed the answers. He'd got 2 numbers off the engine, the V5 would have shown which was correct - by format if nothing else.

We all have to start somewhere . As others have said, it's an interesting thread and pretty informative thus far...
