6W is a not a PG1 gearbox code. NO PG1 gearboxes in the Maestro came with a Torsen diff either.

If its got an LSD it could be from a 200 BRM

        BRM boxes won't fit the O, T, L, M, S series engines though.

Ahh ok, the 1.3 and 1.6 maestros and some montegos used the VW box. I don't know how they were coded or the ratios though.

According to the list I have:

              Code:
              1.3 3+E................3E; 7N; 6T
              1.3 4+E................6W
              1.3 4 speed............2E; 7H; 6S
              1.3 4 speed 700 Van....6H
              1.3 5 speed............7S; 6Y

              1.6 4 speed............1E; 7B; 6R
              1.6 5 speed............4E; 7P; 6W
              1.6 5 speed MG.........5E; 7R; 6X
              A 6W box would be from a 1.6 5 speed, non MG.

              Ratios should be:

              Code:
1600 five-speed gearbox ratios (non MG):
              1st	3.45
              2nd	1.94
              3rd	1.29
              4th	0.91
              5th	0.71
And you should have a final drive of 3.94:1, assuming it's a post July '84 box.

In addition to the 6W code, you should have a few more numbers. These will rather helpfully tell you when the box was made. I.e. if you have "6W 18 04 6", the 6W refers to the VW 020 transaxle type. 18 refers to the date of the month, 04 refers to the month, and 6 refers to the year of manufacture, in this case 6 means 1986, so the date would be the 18th of April, 1986.

Thus, you can check if it's a post July '84 box

Dragging up a very old thread, but is great reading.
so my 83 MG1600, can you tell me the following....
                  1, 1-5 gear ratios
                  2, final drive ratio
3, what LSD will fit this vw box
                  4, will a 1.3 020 vw box be a better bet for my MG1600?
5, what type of box would you reccomemd for... faster taller gears and LSD. I've read a rover 200 BRM box is a good upgrade.
any answers to the above are very well received.
I know everything about ford English axles and diffs, can rebuild them with both eyes closed, but these vw/MG boxs are a little tough getting used to.

The BRM gearbox is not a VW one, so you might have problems mating it to the R series engine. The later s series Montego 1600 use the PG1 rather than vw, so may be possible, but you'd need to change driveshafts and gearchange mechnism too.
