Having interrogated a VW fan with a soft spot for old ARG cars, I concluded that MK 1 Golf gear linkage should have some similarities with our cars and that the Golf Mk 2 might not be vastly different. The MK 1 kits are not expensive & I found a cheap MK2 kit on ebay, so bought one of each to investigate. The links in the MK1 kit are a different length to any of the Maestro ones in my stash, but would be quite easy to 'cut & shut' to fit a Maestro. The only potentially useful link in the Mk2 kit is the long one...this matches a Maestro one lengthwise, but would still be to cut (or twist, or fit reversed) as the sockets are on the wrong side. The short ones are plastic and wrong length, so pretty useless. I think the 'clip fit' sockets should work at least as well as our push on ones. The bushes seem to be the same in both sets and do seem to fit the Maestro, so a VW bush kit might be a good option compared with off the shelf top hat bushes. The pictures tell the story, 09 is the Mk2 kit beside some genuine bits, 10 is the Mk1 kit. I've not explored the potential uses for the other parts in the Mk2 kit yet, if (when) Rover spares dry up completely it may be possible to adapt other readily available VW parts.
