Hardly sporty but if I find a rare model I will do my best to keep it fresh for shows and maybe even some personal touches.

if you're only going to use it for shows then really any model will do, concentrate more on history and condition than engine-type or trim-level.

However as a car to use daily, all else being equal (condition, mileage, general wear and tear), the gap between a 1.3 and an O EFi is chasmic and well worth the jump. The MG is also eligible for some specialist classic insurance shemes and agreed valuations that some Austins are not (varies from insurer to insurer). This will give you added piece of mind in the event of an accident. I agree that's a bit unfair, but that's the way it is

The road-tax is dearer of course, but expressed as a cost-per-week, the difference is easily justified by the benefits of the more powerful engine and EFi fuel-delivery which removes the headache from freezing winter cold-starts.

Of course other opinions are available, but those are mine.

Get an offer in on the 1.6 HLS Jim - It looks a decent car - needs some work, but by the sound of it nothing too major...

it on ebay now though, so be quick!

In the future there won't be many more like this come up - I'm surprised its not generated a bit more interest - i half wish i could justify getting rid of one of mine!

Just bought this car. Hope to get it picked up and shipped to Ireland next week. As far as I am aware it will one of only a few maestros still running in Ireland.
