  • MG Maestro 1600

As you may have read in the technical sub-forum, I have started recommissioning my MG Maestro 1600. I have owned it since April 2001 but it has been off the road since 2012 when it failed its MOT due to corrosion in the driver's sill.

So far I have got the car started after fitting a new fuel pump (see other thread!) and I have checked the car over.

The list of jobs (so far) is as follows:

Fuel pipes all need to be replaced - purchased, not fitted
New sill and arch required for MOT- purchased, not fitted
New rear door (as it looks terrible)
New battery - new Unipart Samson 065 battery fitted
    Handbrake cable has snapped
    Horn doesn't work
    Windscreen washers don't work
One indicator bulb is blown - fixed
Front wipers have perished - replaced
Rear wiper has perished - replaced
Refit rear-view mirror - cleaned adhesive from mirror but not yet fitted.
    Replace driver's door mirror
    Driver's door bin missing
    2x new tyes required
Rear hatch gas struts broken - ordered
+ lots of general cleaning and tidying

I have received one quotation for a fitting a replacement sill and arch - £7380 incl VAT (with me supplying the panels).

Didn't know **** Turpin owned a bodyshop You could go on a welding course, buy a welder, fit the parts & paint the car for that...and have enough left over for a nice holiday...

Arch would be about £250 and sill the same so maybe a decimal point error?

I wondered if it was a typo as well. This is what they said:

So on the basis that you are supplying a replacement sill and a wheel arch section I would estimate the price at around £5850.00 + VAT

If you require it painted as per original please allow another £300.00 +VAT.
Perhaps I should go back to them and check. If is it £585+ £300 + VAT then that would be only £1062. Now although that is a four-figure sum, if they do a good job and it stands up as well as the other side (which was done eleven years ago) I'd be happy.

I have gone back to check and it was a misplaced decimal point. Phew!

Swear filter on the shortened version of Richard which is a rude word! So Richard Turpin it is.

Glad to hear it was a typo rather than Richard Turpin takeover bid If they do a good job that doesn't sound too bad. Certainly better than it was when it was ten times the price...

Yes, I need a good second-hand rear driver's side door.

Found a new door skin but it's in France! So I asked for delivery costs and he seller said it was too big to send to England. I checked on Interparcel and found a courier but it was £178 plus VAT.
