  • Getting Keys Cut?

    Hi,
I have sent away for two blank genuine Rover keys and can't seem to find anyone willing to cut them for me. I only have the one key currently hence buying these as spares, therefore I am desparate to find out where I can get them cut - any ideas guys?????
    Cheers,
    Stevie

Any key cutting shop should be able to do them for you if you are copying your original key.

Timpsons (they have branches all over the country) cut a spare key for my Maestro last year. Although it was one of their blanks it was a car key blank in a similar style to the original, with the plastic coating at the top.

Try an independent traditional cobbler shop as they are far more likely to do it (like the one down the road from me). Large well known chains won't do anything that is either not on the computer or if it seems too fiddly etc.

I too went to a local Timpsons 2 years ago for my Maestro keys and found them first class

Timpsons should do them unless they've changed their policy in the past 18 months or so, and according to them, because you aren't using their key blanks, they won't guarantee the cut/accuracy so they won't charge. (Errr, you're actually using genuine Rover blanks...what could be better than that?). They do expect you to put some money into their charity box, however as a gesture.

Either that or go to a local hardware store that does key cutting, again because you are supplying the blanks they will make a nominal charge to cut them. I was charged 50p each about 10 years ago to get my genuine Rover blanks cut.

Tip: Ask them not to wire brush them after because it scratches the key blade. You could take any burrs off carefully with wet + dry afterwards if it's catching a little.

PS: try and find the least worn existing key to take a pattern from, for obvious reasons!

Mine cost £10, but it might be a bit cheaper as you're supplying your own blank. I decided to get a spare cut as my Maestro only came with the one, and knowing me I'd end up losing it at some point and have to have all the locks replaced The chap was very helpful and said if it didn't work the petrol cap or door lock bring it back and he'd have another go. It didn't need adjustment, it was spot on first time

Good lucky with Timpson's. Policy must vary by branch. My local Timpson's point blankly refuses to cut car keys even though I presented them with a genuine Austin Rover blank. Local independent place won't do them either, he only does keys for Yale and mortise locks.
                      Regards

Strange, the Canterbury branch even has car key blanks hanging on the wall!
