can anyone tell me if the R series distributor is the same as any others? I am having difficulty sourcing one!

According to the EPC there are two types for the R series engine - MG and None-MG. The MG version (ADU6814) does not appear to be recognised anywhere, however the none-MG version (ADU7120) is available from our good friend John Wilcox at Wilcox of Wickwar. Don't know if there are any differences with the internals to cater for the different power outputs, but the distributor repair kit (CDU3867) is common to both types. (D&K in Holland have one of these).
Also, as the R series is reputedly a lightly tweeked E series engine, would the Maxi/Allegro distributor do as a replacement?.
Further research flagged up that it is a Lucas 62DM4 distributor. Googling that code bought up quite a few references, with a couple on Ebay.

The MG version also has horizontal HT lead outputs on the cap, the normal one has vertical, but I didn't think that this would matter.Membership Secretary

They are a little unusual. If you mean the distributor cap with 3 leads pointing one way and two the other coming out at 90 degrees to the normal direction - I've got one sat infront of me right now!
Make me a reasonable offer and I'll get it in the post to you.
Looks just like this:
