  • Crunching reverse gear

A Maestro 2.0 with PG-1 gearbox. When engine cold and revving at about 1200 rpm when engaging reverse gear, it crunches !! to avoid that I need to depress the clutch and put it in 1st then 2nd gear then take out of gear then it goes into reverse OK, 100% of the time . When engine is warm, revving at about 850 rpm does the same about 50% of the time. Any suggestions ?
    thanks
    Chris

Sounds like the clutch is dragging, if it get bad you will need to restart the engine in reverse with the clutch down.
Try pulling on the clutch cable well pushing the self adjuster. what oil is in the box?

That's a good question, we changed the cable, before the change I'd say the "bite" was normal now it's "bites" after a few inches of lifting the pedal.

The oil is the recommended in driver handbook. I received this via the FB page of the M & M Enthusiasts, looks very much like what you say.
          "Y
our clutch is dragging. When you select first, that's enough to part the clutch plate, so it stops dragging. The clutch cable has a small flat horse shoe clip on it near the bulkhead under the bonnet. Pull on the outer cable, and push the black spigot back into the bulkhead at the same time. Sometimes you have to wind it back in, and this should create a gap between the spigot and the horse shoe clip. Pull the clip off and reposition it closer to the spigot. You have now adjusted the cable, and the dragging should stop. If you have done that correctly, and it still drags, there's either a problem with the clutch pressure plate, or oil has leaked onto the clutch. The usual problem is cable adjustment."

As it maybe not the clutch cable then, What's the amount of play in the gearstick?

Same as before, I'd say normal.

Are you sure that is a UUC005073EVA? Looks like a later type cable and a later type clutch lever, and might be fine and in good order, did you try adjusting it?

That's an older photo before we changed the cable, it's a 1986 car and that part number is correct. We're just about to do that adjusting.
                              Thanks for the help.
