  • Delay courtesy light relay - MG Turbo

I need a distraction whilst I solve all my running issues. I noticed the relay for the interior light courtesy delay timer relay is missing. It would be nice to find a replacement.

I was looking at the workshop manual and it all seems rather clever in its operation, but it doesn’t help me in finding the right 4 pins so I’ve relay to fit. Does anyone know of an aftermarket one I can buy?

my understanding of the circuitry is this… again, please correct me if this is wrong. I was scratching my head on this for ages.

Permanent live goes to interior light +ve terminal

Bulb negative terminal goes to 3 way switch with positions:
    1. Earthed - manually switches lights on
    2. Not earthed - light off
    3. Switched earth - doors and relay

For option 3 - delay courtesy light timer
    1. Door is opened which closes switch to earth - light goes on. Also triggers relay by charging capacitor in relay - Pin 86 maybe?
    2. Relay gets constant power to pin 30
    3. Relay is grounded on pin 85
    4. As capacitor discharges over a few seconds the circuit with pin 85 earth breaks and light goes off
    5. If headlights/sidelights are on … somehow pin maybe 86 doesn’t charge capacitor so interior lights go straight off when the door shuts and the circuit is therefore open
I’m guessing here so if anyone is an electrical expert please do correct this. Where can I find a suitable relay? Matthew

Is the plug there that the relay goes into? It might be tucked in behind the fuse box

Hi Jeff. Blank space where it should be in fuse box. Yellow socket.

Are these things bespoke to our cars or off the shelf?

Been busy but had 10 minutes
Teeside (Jim) has a proper relay part numbers are GAE283 and AJM1283, scroll down the link on the list, email is info@classiccarpartscentre.co.uk https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=0b70a...Fsb2d1ZS1hLWIv

Rimmers also had a superseded part number but as that only has two pins I not sure it'll work https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=78abd...S1pLUFKTTEyODM

It’s arrived! Got 5 pins which I wasn’t expecting but I’ll try it out - fingers crossed!

By way of update for anyone referring to this on the future, the relay works perfectly so as Jeff said - this is the right one for the job. Cheers. Matthew
