  • Water leak on 1993 diesel Montego - help please

I am trying to source a leak on my 1993 diesel Montego estate. It suffered a major water loss, noticed before any damage was done. After refill, we got the car home and leak was hard to trace. Nothing when engine running in the drive at normal operating temperature. But, left overnight, and a big pool appears on the floor, on the offside under the engine, below the water pump, so I suspect the leak is in this area. A mechanic friend is going to pressure test the system next week in the hope of tracing the leak. In the meantime, can anyone advise me on where I can buy a new waterpump, gasket and any other accessories, if needed? And I may also replace the cam belt at the same time. Again, any advice on where I can buy one? All help greatfully received. Stewart

The pumps are not easy to find and are expensive, this company in Wolverhampton has reconditioned a few, you'll need to post it to them, but at least they can fix it.. https://www.ep-services.co.uk/ I'mnot sure if they supply gaskets, if not the gasket is the same as any o series engine. Timing belts are available from https://parts4engines.com/collection...iming-belt-kit , a bit pricey, but one of the few sources of the tensioner/idler if you need it... The belts are cheaper on ebay, this seller has listed the various different part numbers, which might be useful https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325616446465 good luck!

            Is it a turbo diesel??
If so, I may have a new water pump

Thanks for the replies so far. They are much appreciated and I will follow up on the links you have provided Doctor Diesel once I have a clearer idea on where the leak is. And in response to Fleckuk yes, mine is a diesel turbo so maybe I can take you up on your offer?

My 1994 diesel Montego has now been examined by a classic car workshop ref the above issue. There is a leak from the water pump and a smaller one from the coolant expansion tank. Thanks to Dr Diesel's replies the garage is now tracing a cambelt (worth doing at the same time) and having the pump overhauled. Much appreciated advice. I did not hear back from Fleck re the offer of a new pump. One further request: can anyone help me trace a new expansion tank. My garage will look to overhaul my existing one, but a new replacement would be better. Thank you in anticipation. Stewart

Unfortunately the petrol and diesel ones are different, on the diesel the little breather pipe on the top comes out of the front of the tank, as the engine mount is in the way of it coming out of the side. This can be very annoying as they are identical apart from that. I might have a spare second hand one, if I can find it!

One thing you might like to consider is using Evans Waterless coolant, when the waterpump is off you can get most of the water out and clean the sludge out of the bottom of the block, you'll still need to use their 'prep fluid' to get the water out of the heater matrix. It is quite expensive, but should help to prevent any future problems and saves having to change the coolant every 2 years. I've had it in mine for 10 years and so far haven't had any problems.

Later cars had the pipe at the front and not the side from memory

That would make sense, they would have to make a different one for the diesel, but could use it on everything by altering the top hose , which would be the cheapest part..

The part number for a front pipe expansion tank is NAM8683. I have tried a basic search and not found anything atm so try searching with that number. The side one is NAM3086
