Just the other day, I decided to check my rear fog lights wondering if I had checked them when I did an initial bulb check. Only one working and it wasn't the more obligatory driver's side one either.
I thought bulb or wiring issue. Hmm...
I checked the bulb first, which is all the problem was

I thought to myself how simple how easy it all was. Easy access and the bulb itself removed so easily in its holder. Even bulb changing on a newer car can be a difficult pain!

I've always thought that making bulbs difficult to change must be deliberate...in the old old days you needed screwdrivers to change bulbs... Then they improved things to eliminate the need for tools (the only Maestro/Montego bulbs that require a screwdriver are estate and van rear lights which are behind screwed on covers in the load space... Next change was blocking the bulbs in behind batteries, air intakes and bumpers and various under wing splash guards, so that what should be a ten minute bulb change can turn into an hours work with snapped and rusty bolts. With modern computer aided design etc it seems unlikely that this change 'just happened'. We are lucky with these cars, they seem to be the last ones made with maintenance in mind, apparently low servicing costs were a priority on the s series 1600 engine, book time for a cambelt change is 30 minutes, you might spend longer getting the covers off a modern engine!
