The springs in the wing mirrors to guard against knocks - There are two in each mirror. On passenger side, one had corroded, "came away". Think I chucked it. I take it these are fairly standard ,can be obtained easily?

Not sure if I have any left but will have a look in my shed, edit found a whole electric mirror you can have. You can strip it down at your leisure so get the springs out and you'll have a spare electric mirror part with the motor and heat section.
Just gimmy £10 including post as don't want a lot for itLast edited by Jeff Turbo; 2nd August 2026, 14:34.1958 Ford Consul Convertible. I love this car

Well, I suddenly remembered this was on my "to do list" -
I took the mirror you suppled Jeff apart, first removing the glass (and back plate!) then unscrewing other parts to get the tensioner springs removed from the hooks within the mirror. I tried re-assembling as a tester - tricky to get the springs hooked back on at both ends even with the mirror in bits!
My passenger side mirror only has one spring, the second having corroded a bit. Any crafty tips on attaching the spring just pushing mirror forward as though knocked??

It can be done easier. Attach the springs to the part that screws into door, put the springs through the opening of the mirror housing, and attach the springs to the back plate then stretch the back plate with the springs attached to the mirror section housing as it'll lock into position so you can put the screws in. You can only put the springs in while it's stripped downOriginally posted by Morris Montego View PostWell, I suddenly remembered this was on my "to do list" -

No worriesOriginally posted by Morris Montego View Post......the pictures have helped greatly - Thinking what to call the plastic the glass is attached to, I used the term "back plate". I then thought by "back plate" Jeff means the gold metal part.....and indeed you do!1958 Ford Consul Convertible. I love this car
